56 WHEREAS, John C. Owens of Lubbock is receiving a
67 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Texas Tech Alumni Association
78 on November 17, 2023; and
89 WHEREAS, Each year, the Texas Tech Alumni Association honors
910 graduates of Texas Tech University who have made a significant
1011 impact on the lives of others through their professional
1112 achievements and community involvement; and
1213 WHEREAS, John Owens attended Texas Tech on a four-year
1314 baseball scholarship, and in his senior year, he was named an
1415 All-Southwest Conference player; he earned a bachelor's degree in
1516 physical education in 1971 and a master's degree in education in
1617 1973; for a year, he played professionally with the San Francisco
1718 Giants organization; he joined the Texas Tech Athletic Department
1819 in 1973 and rose to become associate athletic director for business
1920 development; in 1979, he embarked on a new career that would span 42
2021 years in the banking industry; he cofounded PlainsCapital
2122 Corporation and PlainsCapital Bank and served as chair of
2223 PlainsCapital Bank West Texas Region; now retired, he is a member of
2324 the advisory boards for PlainsCapital Bank in Lubbock and Dallas;
2425 and
2526 WHEREAS, Dedicated to his alma mater, Mr. Owens served as
2627 chair of both the Texas Tech Foundation and the Texas Tech Red
2728 Raider Club, and he was president of the Texas Tech University
2829 Lettermen's Association; moreover, he is a member of the Texas Tech
2930 Alumni Association and the Texas Tech Executive Round Table;
3031 benefiting the wider community, he is a charter member and former
3132 vice chair of the Lubbock Power and Light Electric Utility Board,
3233 and he currently serves on the board of Carillon Senior Living; he
3334 has also served on the Texas Baptist Foundation Board, and he is a
3435 supporter of numerous charitable organizations, including the
3536 American Cancer Society, the March of Dimes, the American Heart
3637 Association, and the Lubbock Area United Way; and
3738 WHEREAS, The accomplishments of noteworthy alumni are a
3839 source of great pride to all those associated with Texas Tech, and
3940 John Owens is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now,
4041 therefore, be it
4142 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas,
4243 4th Called Session, hereby congratulate John C. Owens on being
4344 named a Distinguished Alumni by the Texas Tech Alumni Association
4445 and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
4546 further
4647 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4748 prepared for Mr. Owens as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4849 House of Representatives and Senate.
