5	5	WHEREAS, Dr. Manuel Flores and Adan Chavez distinguished
6	6	themselves through their pioneering work as bilingual radio
7	7	broadcasters for South Texas high school baseball games; and
8	8	WHEREAS, From 1983 to 2013, the duo broadcasted high school
9	9	baseball games in both English and Spanish on KUNO and KSAB, serving
10	10	as the voices for a number of high school teams, including Robstown,
11	11	Moody, Carroll, Calallen, Falfurrias, Riviera, Freer, Odem,
12	12	Sinton, Santa Gertrudis, Bishop, and London; Dr. Flores, a
13	13	journalist and college professor, provided the play-by-play
14	14	analysis while Mr. Chavez, a high school baseball coach and
15	15	longtime educator, was the color commentator; blending bicultural
16	16	elements, the two attracted numerous listeners, often outdrawing
17	17	English-only stations and broadcasts of Houston Astros games; their
18	18	efforts contributed to the growing popularity of high school
19	19	baseball in the region, and they helped showcase the sport as the
20	20	area became a hotbed of title-contending teams; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Operating with limited equipment and resources,
22	22	Dr. Flores and Mr. Chavez did whatever was necessary to deliver the
23	23	games to their audience; they sometimes stationed themselves in the
24	24	stands or next to a team dugout when they were unable to secure a
25	25	place in the press box, and in 1989 they began using cell phones in
26	26	their work; their ability to interview coaches and players via
27	27	phone immediately after the game broke new ground for South Texas
28	28	sports coverage; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Born in Laredo and raised in Hebbronville,
30	30	Dr. Flores has served as a journalism professor at Texas A&M
31	31	University-Kingsville since 2006, and he has published six books
32	32	and made more than 200 academic presentations; he was inducted into
33	33	the Miller High School Buccaneers Athletics Hall of Fame and also
34	34	called high school football games for the institution; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Mr. Chavez served as a teacher and administrator for
36	36	the Corpus Christi Independent School District for many years
37	37	before retiring in 2016; an inductee into the Moody Hall of Fame, he
38	38	continues to serve as an announcer for high school baseball games;
39	39	and
40	40	WHEREAS, With their passion, charm, and love of the game,
41	41	Dr. Manuel Flores and Adan Chavez delighted baseball fans during
42	42	the golden era of South Texas baseball, and their contributions
43	43	will be appreciated for many years to come; now, therefore, be it
44	44	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
45	45	Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby honor Dr. Manuel Flores and
46	46	Adan Chavez for their contributions as baseball broadcasters and
47	47	extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
48	48	further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for Dr. Flores and Mr. Chavez as an expression of high
51	51	regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
