7 | 7 | | who have given their lives in armed conflict, an event that marked |

8 | 8 | | the first ever Texas Memorial Illumination; and |

9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Volunteers assembled and placed 21,500 luminaries |
---|
10 | 10 | | on the fields of the historic San Jacinto Battlefield, representing |
---|
11 | 11 | | the number of Texans who have made the ultimate sacrifice from the |
---|
12 | 12 | | days of the Texas Revolution through the recent military operations |
---|
13 | 13 | | in Afghanistan; presented by the San Jacinto Museum, the inaugural |
---|
14 | 14 | | Texas Memorial Illumination was made even more meaningful by its |
---|
15 | 15 | | location at the San Jacinto Battlefield, the site of the decisive |
---|
16 | 16 | | battle for Texas' independence and home to the towering |
---|
17 | 17 | | 567-foot-tall San Jacinto Monument; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The luminaries served as an artful depiction of what |
---|
19 | 19 | | President Abraham Lincoln called "the last full measure of |
---|
20 | 20 | | devotion," reminding attendees of the true price of freedom and the |
---|
21 | 21 | | sacrifices of those who have helped preserve it; inspired by the |
---|
22 | 22 | | annual memorial illumination ceremony that takes place at the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Antietam National Battlefield in Maryland, the event represented |
---|
24 | 24 | | the first such ceremony held at a battlefield in the state of Texas; |
---|

26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The inaugural Texas Memorial Illumination was a |

27 | 27 | | solemn and moving tribute to those to whom we owe an eternal debt of |

28 | 28 | | gratitude, and it is fitting that all Texans join in recognizing the |

29 | 29 | | lasting legacy of their contributions to our state and nation; now, |
