5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their |
---|
6 | 6 | | memories of Lou Ethel Gaw of Marshall, who passed away on July 16, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 2023, at the age of 94; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Ralph and Ida Ramey, the former |
---|
9 | 9 | | Lou Ramey was born in Gilmer on June 21, 1929; a standout student |
---|
10 | 10 | | at Gilmer High School, she was a member of several campus |
---|
11 | 11 | | organizations, and she graduated as valedictorian in 1946; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Gaw went on to receive a bachelor's degree in |
---|
13 | 13 | | Latin and English from The University of Texas at Austin, and she |
---|
14 | 14 | | later earned a master's degree from East Texas State University; |
---|
15 | 15 | | following a year teaching high school in San Angelo, she took a |
---|
16 | 16 | | job at the R. G. LeTourneau company, where she met her future |
---|
17 | 17 | | husband, William "Bill" Gaw Jr.; the couple wed in 1953; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. and Mrs. Gaw moved from Longview to |
---|
19 | 19 | | Marshall, and Mrs. Gaw went on to serve as both a full-time and |
---|
20 | 20 | | substitute teacher; active in her community, she gave generously |
---|
21 | 21 | | of her time and talents to numerous organizations; in addition to |
---|
22 | 22 | | her dedication to the Marshall Rotary Club, she was a founding |
---|
23 | 23 | | member of the Republican Women of Harrison County in 1968, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | she was involved in a number of conservative political groups; |
---|
25 | 25 | | she held local and state positions in the Texas Federation of |
---|
26 | 26 | | Republican Women and the Republican Party of Texas and served on |
---|
27 | 27 | | the Civic Center Advisory Board, as well as the boards of the |
---|
28 | 28 | | annual Marshall Days at the Capitol, the local library, the |
---|
29 | 29 | | Charter Commission, and the Marshall Regional Arts Council; |
---|
30 | 30 | | moreover, she brought a number of high-ranking officials, |
---|
31 | 31 | | including two U.S. presidents, to East Texas to speak with local |
---|
32 | 32 | | voters, and in 2000, she was chosen as the Outstanding Citizen of |
---|
33 | 33 | | the Year by the Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Gaw shared a rewarding marriage with her |
---|
35 | 35 | | husband, who preceded her in death; they raised two children, Lee |
---|
36 | 36 | | and Kelly, and their treasured family grew to include their |
---|
37 | 37 | | grandchildren, Christopher, Halie, Michael, Ross, and Jay, as |
---|
38 | 38 | | well as their great-grandchildren, Ava and Tyler; a woman of |
---|
39 | 39 | | faith, Mrs. Gaw was a dedicated congregant of First Methodist |
---|
40 | 40 | | Church; in her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bridge; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Lou Gaw lived a life that was rich in family, |
---|
42 | 42 | | friends, and community service, and those who were privileged to |
---|
43 | 43 | | share in her love and affection will forever hold her close in |
---|
44 | 44 | | their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
---|
46 | 46 | | Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |
---|
47 | 47 | | of Lou Ethel Gaw and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn |
---|
48 | 48 | | her passing; and, be it further |
---|
49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
---|
50 | 50 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns |
---|
51 | 51 | | this day, it do so in memory of Lou Gaw. |
