55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their
66 memories of Lou Ethel Gaw of Marshall, who passed away on July 16,
77 2023, at the age of 94; and
88 WHEREAS, The daughter of Ralph and Ida Ramey, the former
99 Lou Ramey was born in Gilmer on June 21, 1929; a standout student
1010 at Gilmer High School, she was a member of several campus
1111 organizations, and she graduated as valedictorian in 1946; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mrs. Gaw went on to receive a bachelor's degree in
1313 Latin and English from The University of Texas at Austin, and she
1414 later earned a master's degree from East Texas State University;
1515 following a year teaching high school in San Angelo, she took a
1616 job at the R. G. LeTourneau company, where she met her future
1717 husband, William "Bill" Gaw Jr.; the couple wed in 1953; and
1818 WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. and Mrs. Gaw moved from Longview to
1919 Marshall, and Mrs. Gaw went on to serve as both a full-time and
2020 substitute teacher; active in her community, she gave generously
2121 of her time and talents to numerous organizations; in addition to
2222 her dedication to the Marshall Rotary Club, she was a founding
2323 member of the Republican Women of Harrison County in 1968, and
2424 she was involved in a number of conservative political groups;
2525 she held local and state positions in the Texas Federation of
2626 Republican Women and the Republican Party of Texas and served on
2727 the Civic Center Advisory Board, as well as the boards of the
2828 annual Marshall Days at the Capitol, the local library, the
2929 Charter Commission, and the Marshall Regional Arts Council;
3030 moreover, she brought a number of high-ranking officials,
3131 including two U.S. presidents, to East Texas to speak with local
3232 voters, and in 2000, she was chosen as the Outstanding Citizen of
3333 the Year by the Greater Marshall Chamber of Commerce; and
3434 WHEREAS, Mrs. Gaw shared a rewarding marriage with her
3535 husband, who preceded her in death; they raised two children, Lee
3636 and Kelly, and their treasured family grew to include their
3737 grandchildren, Christopher, Halie, Michael, Ross, and Jay, as
3838 well as their great-grandchildren, Ava and Tyler; a woman of
3939 faith, Mrs. Gaw was a dedicated congregant of First Methodist
4040 Church; in her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bridge; and
4141 WHEREAS, Lou Gaw lived a life that was rich in family,
4242 friends, and community service, and those who were privileged to
4343 share in her love and affection will forever hold her close in
4444 their hearts; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
4646 Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
4747 of Lou Ethel Gaw and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn
4848 her passing; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
5050 prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
5151 this day, it do so in memory of Lou Gaw.
