6 | 6 | | philanthropy with the death of Robert Lee Moody Sr. on |

7 | 7 | | November 7, 2023, at the age of 88; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born on Galveston Island on July 28, 1935, Bobby |
---|
9 | 9 | | Moody was the son of Shearn Moody Sr. and Frances Moody Newman; |
---|
10 | 10 | | his father died the following year, and he and his brother, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Shearn, were educated at boarding school; Bobby Moody graduated |
---|
12 | 12 | | as the top cadet at Valley Forge Military Academy and served his |
---|
13 | 13 | | country in the U.S. Army; mentored by his grandfather, W. L. |
---|
14 | 14 | | Moody, the founder of American National Insurance Company, he |
---|
15 | 15 | | possessed similar business acumen and established National |
---|
16 | 16 | | Western Life Insurance Company in 1956; he eventually rose to |
---|
17 | 17 | | become chair and president/CEO of ANICO and built it into one of |
---|
18 | 18 | | the country's premier insurance firms; in addition, he created an |
---|
19 | 19 | | affiliated company that developed the South Shore Harbour |
---|
20 | 20 | | subdivision, hotel, and conference center in League City; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Moody also held other key roles in the family |
---|
22 | 22 | | business empire, including chair of Moody National Bank; while |
---|
23 | 23 | | earning esteem as one of the city's most prominent citizens, he |
---|
24 | 24 | | was known for treating everyone around him with respect and |
---|
25 | 25 | | empathy; he encouraged the professional development of his |
---|
26 | 26 | | employees, and many stayed on for decades; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to his hometown, Mr. Moody guided the |
---|
28 | 28 | | charitable Moody Foundation and found numerous ways to make a |
---|
29 | 29 | | positive impact; he established the Moody Neurorehabilitation |
---|
30 | 30 | | Institute to help brain trauma patients, and in 1992, he |
---|
31 | 31 | | spearheaded construction of Moody Gardens; one of the |
---|
32 | 32 | | Southwest's premier educational and leisure facilities, Moody |
---|
33 | 33 | | Gardens draws some two million visitors annually, spurring the |
---|
34 | 34 | | local economy while providing horticultural therapy, education, |
---|
35 | 35 | | and employment for individuals with disabilities; he further |
---|
36 | 36 | | benefited the disability community by creating the Moody |
---|
37 | 37 | | Endowment; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Moody maintained a healthy balance between |
---|
39 | 39 | | his myriad ventures and his home life; he and his wife of 53 |
---|
40 | 40 | | years, Ann McLeod Moody, raised a blended family of eight |
---|
41 | 41 | | children, and they broadened their horizons with extensive |
---|
42 | 42 | | travel; on Saturday mornings, he was coach, pitcher, and umpire |
---|
43 | 43 | | for baseball games with all the neighborhood children; he was |
---|
44 | 44 | | preceded in death by an infant son and by his wife; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, An ardent champion of Galveston, Bobby Moody |
---|
46 | 46 | | worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for its citizens, |
---|
47 | 47 | | through both his professional and philanthropic endeavors, and |
---|
48 | 48 | | his contributions will continue to resonate in the years to come; |
---|
49 | 49 | | now, therefore, be it |

50 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th |
