55 WHEREAS, The city of Galveston lost a titan of business and
66 philanthropy with the death of Robert Lee Moody Sr. on
77 November 7, 2023, at the age of 88; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on Galveston Island on July 28, 1935, Bobby
99 Moody was the son of Shearn Moody Sr. and Frances Moody Newman;
1010 his father died the following year, and he and his brother,
1111 Shearn, were educated at boarding school; Bobby Moody graduated
1212 as the top cadet at Valley Forge Military Academy and served his
1313 country in the U.S. Army; mentored by his grandfather, W. L.
1414 Moody, the founder of American National Insurance Company, he
1515 possessed similar business acumen and established National
1616 Western Life Insurance Company in 1956; he eventually rose to
1717 become chair and president/CEO of ANICO and built it into one of
1818 the country's premier insurance firms; in addition, he created an
1919 affiliated company that developed the South Shore Harbour
2020 subdivision, hotel, and conference center in League City; and
2121 WHEREAS, Mr. Moody also held other key roles in the family
2222 business empire, including chair of Moody National Bank; while
2323 earning esteem as one of the city's most prominent citizens, he
2424 was known for treating everyone around him with respect and
2525 empathy; he encouraged the professional development of his
2626 employees, and many stayed on for decades; and
2727 WHEREAS, Devoted to his hometown, Mr. Moody guided the
2828 charitable Moody Foundation and found numerous ways to make a
2929 positive impact; he established the Moody Neurorehabilitation
3030 Institute to help brain trauma patients, and in 1992, he
3131 spearheaded construction of Moody Gardens; one of the
3232 Southwest's premier educational and leisure facilities, Moody
3333 Gardens draws some two million visitors annually, spurring the
3434 local economy while providing horticultural therapy, education,
3535 and employment for individuals with disabilities; he further
3636 benefited the disability community by creating the Moody
3737 Endowment; and
3838 WHEREAS, Mr. Moody maintained a healthy balance between
3939 his myriad ventures and his home life; he and his wife of 53
4040 years, Ann McLeod Moody, raised a blended family of eight
4141 children, and they broadened their horizons with extensive
4242 travel; on Saturday mornings, he was coach, pitcher, and umpire
4343 for baseball games with all the neighborhood children; he was
4444 preceded in death by an infant son and by his wife; and
4545 WHEREAS, An ardent champion of Galveston, Bobby Moody
4646 worked tirelessly to provide opportunities for its citizens,
4747 through both his professional and philanthropic endeavors, and
4848 his contributions will continue to resonate in the years to come;
4949 now, therefore, be it
5050 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
5151 Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life
5252 of Robert Lee Moody Sr. and extend sincere condolences to the
5353 members of his family: to his children, Robert L. Moody Jr. and
5454 his wife, Ingrid, Russell S. Moody, Ross R. Moody, Frances Anne
5555 "Francie" Moody-Dahlberg and her husband, Kevin, Edwin Vince
5656 "Vic" Matthews and his wife, Cindi, Lea McLeod Matthews and her
5757 wife, Jennifer, Allan Watkins Matthews and his wife, Lori, and
5858 Dorothea "Dotsy" Matthews Balentine and her husband, David; to
5959 his grandchildren, Elizabeth Lee "Elle" Moody and her husband,
6060 James Gray, Frances Moody Buzbee and her husband, Tony, Robert L.
6161 Moody III, Jackson Davis "Jack" Moody, Maggie Grace Moody,
6262 Russell Shearn "Rusty" Moody II, William Charles McLeod "Will"
6363 Matthews and his wife, Emma, Katherine Leanne "Kit" Matthews,
6464 Tiffany Nicole Bastow, Kimberly McLeod Almon and her husband,
6565 Jackson, Marissa Ann Matthews, Lauren Anne Balentine, Alexis
6666 Gabrielle Moody-Dahlberg, and Ashton Lee Moody-Dahlberg; to his
6767 great-grandchildren, Ella Ann Grant, Jackson "Pierce" Almon II,
6868 Brooks Woodson Almon, and Ann McLeod "Annie" Almon; and to his
6969 other relatives and friends; and, be it further
7070 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
7171 prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns
7272 this day, it do so in memory of Robert Lee Moody Sr.
