5+ SENATE RESOLUTION
26 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
37 recognize John Ben Sutter, who is retiring as professor of
48 government and political science from Houston Community College
59 after an outstanding career in higher education and public
610 service; and
711 WHEREAS, The first graduate in his family, John Ben Sutter
812 earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees in communications
913 and political science from Baylor University; a gifted scholar,
1014 he received his law degree from South Texas College of Law; and
1115 WHEREAS, Before pursuing a career as an educator, John
1216 served in several roles in state and federal government,
1317 including in service to United States Congressman W. R. "Bob"
1418 Poage, United States Congressman Mike Andrews, Texas Attorney
1519 General Jim Mattox, and McLennan County District Attorney Vic
1620 Feazell; and
1721 WHEREAS, John began his teaching career at Austin
1822 Community College, and drawing on knowledge gained throughout
1923 his experience in public service, he taught courses on Texas and
2024 national government for more than 30 years; and
2125 WHEREAS, John taught at a number of institutions of higher
2226 learning from the Texas Panhandle to the Texas Gulf Coast, and he
2327 reached students across the globe through his online teaching; he
2428 taught at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton and Sugar Land
2529 before teaching government and political science at Houston
2630 Community College; and
2731 WHEREAS, Throughout his time as a professor, John
2832 contributed to the intellectual formation of tens of thousands of
2933 community college students, and he encouraged his pupils to value
3034 knowledge and pursue higher learning; and
3135 WHEREAS, A beloved and respected professor and mentor,
3236 John has had a positive impact on countless students and
3337 educators through his teaching and scholarship; his wisdom and
3438 his service to education will continue to benefit Texas scholars
3539 and teachers, and it is indeed fitting that he receive special
3640 recognition on his outstanding contributions to the Lone Star
3741 State; now, therefore, be it
3842 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th
3943 Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby commend John Ben Sutter
4044 on his distinguished career in higher education and extend to him
41- congratulations on his retirement and best wishes for the future;
42- and, be it further
45+ and congratulations him on his retirement and best wishes for the
46+ future; and, be it further
4347 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4448 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
