77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to persons authorized to conduct a marriage ceremony.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Sections 2.202(a) and (b), Family Code, are
1212 amended to read as follows:
1313 (a) The following persons are authorized to conduct a
1414 marriage ceremony:
1515 (1) a licensed or ordained Christian minister or
1616 priest;
1717 (2) a Jewish rabbi;
1818 (3) a Buddhist monk or priest;
1919 (4) a Hindu pundit;
2020 (5) a Muslim imam;
2121 (6) a Sikh granthi;
2222 (7) [(3)] a person who [is an officer of a religious
2323 organization and who] is authorized by a religious [the]
2424 organization to conduct a marriage ceremony; and
2525 (8) [(4)] a current, former, or retired federal judge
2626 or state judge.
2727 (b) For the purposes of Subsection (a)(8) [(a)(4)],
2828 "federal judge" and "state judge" have the meanings assigned by
2929 Section 25.025, Tax Code.
3030 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
3131 to a marriage ceremony that is conducted on or after the effective
3232 date of this Act. A marriage ceremony conducted before the
3333 effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the
3434 date the ceremony was conducted, and the former law is continued in
3535 effect for that purpose.
3636 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
