10 | 10 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
11 | 11 | SECTION 1. Sections 2.202(a) and (b), Family Code, are | |
12 | 12 | amended to read as follows: | |
13 | 13 | (a) The following persons are authorized to conduct a | |
14 | 14 | marriage ceremony: | |
15 | 15 | (1) a licensed or ordained Christian minister or | |
16 | 16 | priest; | |
17 | 17 | (2) a Jewish rabbi; | |
18 | 18 | (3) a Buddhist monk or priest; | |
19 | 19 | (4) a Hindu pundit; | |
20 | 20 | (5) a Muslim imam; | |
21 | 21 | (6) a Sikh granthi; | |
22 | 22 | (7) [(3)] a person who [is an officer of a religious | |
23 | 23 | organization and who] is authorized by a religious [the] | |
24 | 24 | organization to conduct a marriage ceremony; and | |
25 | 25 | (8) [(4)] a current, former, or retired federal judge | |
26 | 26 | or state judge. | |
27 | 27 | (b) For the purposes of Subsection (a)(8) [(a)(4)], | |
28 | 28 | "federal judge" and "state judge" have the meanings assigned by | |
29 | 29 | Section 25.025, Tax Code. | |
30 | 30 | SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | |
31 | 31 | to a marriage ceremony that is conducted on or after the effective | |
32 | 32 | date of this Act. A marriage ceremony conducted before the | |
33 | 33 | effective date of this Act is governed by the law in effect on the | |
34 | 34 | date the ceremony was conducted, and the former law is continued in | |
35 | 35 | effect for that purpose. | |
36 | 36 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
