8 | 8 | | relating to license plates issued for and displayed on passenger |

9 | 9 | | cars and light trucks. |

10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Section 504.010, Transportation Code, is amended |
---|
12 | 12 | | by amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (d) to read as |
---|
13 | 13 | | follows: |
---|
14 | 14 | | (a) On payment of the prescribed fee, an applicant for motor |
---|
15 | 15 | | vehicle registration shall be issued a license plate or set of |
---|
16 | 16 | | plates, provided that the department must issue a set of two plates |
---|
17 | 17 | | to an applicant for registration of a passenger car or light truck. |
---|
18 | 18 | | (d) A rule adopted under Subsection (c) must authorize a |
---|
19 | 19 | | passenger car or light truck to display only a rear license plate. |
---|
20 | 20 | | SECTION 2. Section 504.943(a), Transportation Code, is |
---|
21 | 21 | | amended to read as follows: |
---|
22 | 22 | | (a) A [Except as provided by Subsection (b), a] person |
---|
23 | 23 | | commits an offense if the person operates on a public highway, |
---|
24 | 24 | | during a registration period, a [motor] vehicle that does not |
---|
25 | 25 | | display all [two] license plates required by this chapter or a rule |
---|
26 | 26 | | adopted under this chapter to be displayed on the vehicle that: |
---|
27 | 27 | | (1) have been assigned by the department for the |
---|
28 | 28 | | period; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | (2) comply with department rules regarding the |
---|
30 | 30 | | placement of license plates. |
---|
31 | 31 | | SECTION 3. Section 504.943(b), Transportation Code, is |
---|
32 | 32 | | repealed. |
---|
33 | 33 | | SECTION 4. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
---|
34 | 34 | | to an offense committed on or after the effective date of this Act. |
---|
35 | 35 | | An offense committed before the effective date of this Act is |
---|
36 | 36 | | governed by the law in effect on the date the offense was committed, |
---|
37 | 37 | | and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. For |
---|
38 | 38 | | purposes of this section, an offense was committed before the |
---|
39 | 39 | | effective date of this Act if any element of the offense occurred |
---|
40 | 40 | | before that date. |
---|
41 | 41 | | SECTION 5. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
