77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to a bonus payment for classroom teachers employed by a
1010 public school; making an appropriation.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. (a) In this section, "classroom teacher" means
1313 an educator who, not less than an average of four hours each day,
1414 teaches in an academic instructional setting or a career and
1515 technology instructional setting. The term does not include a
1616 teacher's aide or a full-time administrator.
1717 (b) Each classroom teacher employed by a school district or
1818 open-enrollment charter school on September 1, 2025, is entitled to
1919 a bonus payment in addition to the teacher's compensation for the
2020 2025-2026 school year in an amount equal to $12,000.
2121 (c) An amount necessary to provide the bonus payment to each
2222 eligible classroom teacher under Subsection (b) of this section is
2323 appropriated from the general revenue fund to the Texas Education
2424 Agency for the state fiscal year beginning September 1, 2025, for
2525 distribution to school districts and open-enrollment charter
2626 schools on the basis of the number of classroom teachers employed by
2727 each district or school on September 1, 2025. The agency shall
2828 distribute the money appropriated under this section as soon as
2929 practicable after the effective date of this Act.
3030 (d) A school district or open-enrollment charter school may
3131 use money distributed under Subsection (c) of this section only to
3232 provide a bonus payment to each classroom teacher employed by the
3333 district or school for the 2025-2026 school year in accordance with
3434 Subsection (b) of this section. The district or school shall
3535 provide the bonus payment to each teacher in 12 equal monthly
3636 installments.
3737 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
