| 9 | 9 | | relating to the minimum duration of certain protective orders. |

| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Article 7B.007(a), Code of Criminal Procedure, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | (a) A protective order issued under Article 7B.003 may be |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | effective for the duration of the lives of the offender and victim |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | or for a [any shorter] period of not less than one year stated in the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | order. If a period is not stated in the order, the order is |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | effective until the second anniversary of the date the order was |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | issued. |

| 19 | 19 | | SECTION 2. Section 85.025(a), Family Code, is amended to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | read as follows: |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | (a) Except as otherwise provided by this section, an order |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | under this subtitle is effective: |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | (1) for a [the] period of not less than one year and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | not more than two years stated in the order [, not to exceed two |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | years]; or |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (2) if a period is not stated in the order, until the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | second anniversary of the date the order was issued. |

| 28 | 28 | | SECTION 3. The change in law made by this Act applies only |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to a protective order rendered on or after the effective date of |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | this Act. A protective order rendered before the effective date of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | this Act is governed by the law in effect on the date the order was |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | rendered, and the former law is continued in effect for that |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | purpose. |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
