77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to requiring coursework in nutrition at public medical
1010 schools.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1313 amended by adding Section 51.311 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 51.311. NUTRITION MEDICAL EDUCATION COURSEWORK. (a)
1515 In this section, "medical school" means:
1616 (1) a medical school as defined by Section 61.501; or
1717 (2) any other institution of higher education, as
1818 defined by Section 61.003, or school, department, or college of
1919 such an institution, that awards medical degrees.
2020 (b) Each medical school shall include in the curriculum
2121 required for a medical degree at least three hours of coursework in
2222 nutrition. The coursework must cover, at a minimum, information
2323 about:
2424 (1) normal caloric intake for healthy adults;
2525 (2) diet modifications for individuals with food
2626 allergies, diabetes, or other chronic conditions that require diet
2727 modification;
2828 (3) the importance of proper nutrition as a primary
2929 strategy to prevent certain diseases and conditions, such as
3030 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity; and
3131 (4) additives commonly found in food and beverage
3232 products produced in the United States, as opposed to food and
3333 beverage products produced in foreign countries.
3434 (c) The coursework required under Subsection (b) may not be
3535 developed, funded, or influenced by a pharmaceutical company or a
3636 food or beverage company.
3737 (d) This section does not apply to the requirements for the
3838 degree program of a student who entered the degree program at a
3939 medical school before the 2026 spring semester. This subsection
4040 expires January 1, 2032.
4141 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4242 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4343 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4444 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4545 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
