68 AN ACT
79 relating to periodic occupational cancer screenings for
810 firefighters.
911 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1012 SECTION 1. This Act may be cited as the Wade Cannon Act.
1113 SECTION 2. Chapter 180, Local Government Code, is amended
1214 by adding Section 180.011 to read as follows:
1315 Sec. 180.011. OCCUPATIONAL CANCER SCREENING FOR
1416 FIREFIGHTERS. (a) In this section, "firefighter" means an
1517 individual defined as fire protection personnel under Section
1618 419.021, Government Code.
1719 (b) A political subdivision that employs firefighters shall
1820 offer an occupational cancer screening to each firefighter at no
1921 cost to the firefighter in the fifth year of the firefighter's
2022 employment, and once every three years following the initial
2123 screening.
2224 (c) The occupational cancer screening must be confidential
2325 and test for each type of cancer, including:
2426 (1) colorectal cancer;
2527 (2) prostate cancer, if applicable;
2628 (3) lung cancer; and
2729 (4) brain cancer.
2830 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
