77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to the development of a standard method of computing a
1010 student's high school grade point average.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Sections 28.0252(a) and (b), Education Code, are
1313 amended to read as follows:
1414 (a) The commissioner shall [may] develop a standard method
1515 of computing a student's high school grade point average that
1616 provides for additional weight to be given to each honors course,
1717 advanced placement course, international baccalaureate course, or
1818 dual credit course completed by a student. The method must provide
1919 for an equal amount of additional weight to be given to an advanced
2020 placement course, an international baccalaureate course, and a dual
2121 credit course.
2222 (b) A [If the commissioner develops a standard method under
2323 this section, a] school district shall use the standard method
2424 developed by the commissioner under Subsection (a) to compute a
2525 student's high school grade point average.
2626 SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date
2727 of this Act, the commissioner of education shall develop a standard
2828 method of computing a student's high school grade point average as
2929 required by Section 28.0252(a), Education Code, as amended by this
3030 Act.
3131 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3232 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3333 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3434 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3535 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
