77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to a study by the Department of Public Safety on stolen
1010 firearms.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. DEFINITIONS. In this Act:
1313 (1) "Department" means the Department of Public Safety
1414 of the State of Texas.
1515 (2) "Firearm" has the meaning assigned by Section
1616 46.01, Penal Code.
1717 SECTION 2. STUDY ON STOLEN FIREARMS. The department shall,
1818 using any available data, conduct a study to determine the extent to
1919 which stolen firearms have been used to commit offenses in this
2020 state since January 1, 1980.
2121 SECTION 3. REPORT. Not later than December 1, 2026, the
2222 department shall submit a report regarding the results of the study
2323 to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house
2424 of representatives, and each standing committee of the legislature
2525 with primary jurisdiction over criminal justice matters.
2626 SECTION 4. EXPIRATION. This Act expires February 1, 2027.
2727 SECTION 5. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September
2828 1, 2025.
