11 | 11 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
12 | 12 | SECTION 1. DEFINITIONS. In this Act: | |
13 | 13 | (1) "Department" means the Department of Public Safety | |
14 | 14 | of the State of Texas. | |
15 | 15 | (2) "Firearm" has the meaning assigned by Section | |
16 | 16 | 46.01, Penal Code. | |
17 | 17 | SECTION 2. STUDY ON STOLEN FIREARMS. The department shall, | |
18 | 18 | using any available data, conduct a study to determine the extent to | |
19 | 19 | which stolen firearms have been used to commit offenses in this | |
20 | 20 | state since January 1, 1980. | |
21 | 21 | SECTION 3. REPORT. Not later than December 1, 2026, the | |
22 | 22 | department shall submit a report regarding the results of the study | |
23 | 23 | to the governor, the lieutenant governor, the speaker of the house | |
24 | 24 | of representatives, and each standing committee of the legislature | |
25 | 25 | with primary jurisdiction over criminal justice matters. | |
26 | 26 | SECTION 4. EXPIRATION. This Act expires February 1, 2027. | |
27 | 27 | SECTION 5. EFFECTIVE DATE. This Act takes effect September | |
28 | 28 | 1, 2025. |
