77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to requiring notice regarding the potential eligibility to
1010 vote of certain persons convicted of a felony.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter O, Chapter 42A, Code of Criminal
1313 Procedure, is amended by adding Article 42A.703 to read as follows:
1414 Art. 42A.703. NOTICE REGARDING POTENTIAL ELIGIBILITY FOR
1515 VOTER REGISTRATION. A judge who discharges under Article 42A.701 a
1616 defendant placed on community supervision for a felony shall notify
1717 the defendant, in writing, that the defendant may be eligible to
1818 register to vote under Section 13.001, Election Code.
1919 SECTION 2. Chapter 493, Government Code, is amended by
2020 adding Section 493.036 to read as follows:
2121 Sec. 493.036. NOTICE REGARDING POTENTIAL ELIGIBILITY FOR
2222 VOTER REGISTRATION. (a) In this section, "offender" means an
2323 inmate or state jail defendant.
2424 (b) The department shall notify, in writing, an offender who
2525 completes the offender's sentence, including any period of parole
2626 or mandatory supervision, that the offender may be eligible to
2727 register to vote under Section 13.001, Election Code.
2828 SECTION 3. The changes in law made by this Act apply only to
2929 a person who fully discharges a sentence, including any term of
3030 incarceration, parole, or supervision, or completes a period of
3131 probation ordered by any court on or after the effective date of
3232 this Act.
3333 SECTION 4. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
