77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to the inclusion of firearm safety instruction in the
1010 required health curriculum for public school students.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1313 adding Subsection (u) to read as follows:
1414 (u) In addition to any other essential knowledge and skills
1515 the State Board of Education adopts for the health curriculum under
1616 Subsection (a)(2)(B), the board shall adopt for the health
1717 curriculum essential knowledge and skills that address topics
1818 relating to firearm safety that:
1919 (1) focus on accident prevention;
2020 (2) promote the safety and protection of students; and
2121 (3) emphasize how students should respond when
2222 encountering a firearm.
2323 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026
2424 school year.
2525 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2626 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2727 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2828 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2929 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
