77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to an elective course on automobile maintenance for public
1010 high school students.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
1313 amended by adding Section 28.015 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 28.015. ELECTIVE COURSE ON AUTOMOBILE MAINTENANCE.
1515 (a) A school district may offer to students in grades 9 through 12
1616 an elective course on automobile maintenance that meets the
1717 requirements for an elective credit under Section 28.025.
1818 (b) A course under this section must include instruction in
1919 and information relating to:
2020 (1) checking and refilling or replacing:
2121 (A) engine oil;
2222 (B) coolant;
2323 (C) brake fluid;
2424 (D) transmission fluid; and
2525 (E) power steering fluid;
2626 (2) checking tire pressure and tire tread depth;
2727 (3) changing a tire, performing a tire rotation, and
2828 repairing a flat tire;
2929 (4) battery maintenance, including the correct method
3030 for jumpstarting a battery;
3131 (5) checking and replacing:
3232 (A) fuses;
3333 (B) engine air filters; and
3434 (C) cabin air filters;
3535 (6) the meaning of common dashboard warning lights;
3636 and
3737 (7) safe working practices in an automotive
3838 environment, including proper tool usage and safe disposal of
3939 fluids or hazardous materials.
4040 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2025-2026
4141 school year.
4242 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
4343 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
4444 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
4545 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
4646 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
