77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to requiring training in the importance of mental and
1010 physical health as a requisite for certain medical degrees.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1313 amended by adding Section 51.312 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 51.312. MENTAL AND PHYSICAL HEALTH TRAINING REQUIRED.
1515 (a) In this section, "medical school" means:
1616 (1) a medical school as defined by Section 61.501; and
1717 (2) any other institution of higher education, as
1818 defined by Section 61.003, or school, department, or college of
1919 such an institution, that awards medical degrees.
2020 (b) Each medical school shall include training regarding
2121 the importance of student, resident, and physician mental and
2222 physical health in the curriculum required for a medical degree.
2323 (c) This section does not apply to the requirements for the
2424 degree program of a student who entered the degree program at a
2525 medical school before the 2026 fall semester. This subsection
2626 expires January 1, 2032.
2727 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2828 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2929 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3030 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3131 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
