66 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
77 AN ACT
88 relating to a restriction on political expenditures made during and
99 following a regular legislative session; creating a criminal
1010 offense.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 253, Election Code, is
1313 amended by adding Section 253.0342 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 253.0342. RESTRICTION ON EXPENDITURES DURING AND
1515 FOLLOWING REGULAR LEGISLATIVE SESSION. (a) This section applies
1616 only to:
1717 (1) a candidate;
1818 (2) an officeholder;
1919 (3) a specific-purpose committee for supporting or
2020 opposing a candidate;
2121 (4) a group of persons organized for the principal
2222 purpose of accepting political contributions or making political
2323 expenditures; and
2424 (5) a committee, club, association, or other group of
2525 persons that accepts political contributions or makes political
2626 expenditures for the purpose of influencing an election in this
2727 state.
2828 (b) During the period described by Section 253.034(a), a
2929 person to whom this section applies may not make expenditures that
3030 either support or oppose a statewide officeholder or a member of the
3131 legislature.
3232 (c) A person commits an offense if the person violates this
3333 section. An offense under this subsection is a Class A misdemeanor.
3434 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
