| 10 | 10 | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | |
| 11 | 11 | SECTION 1. Section 45.001, Family Code, is amended to read | |
| 12 | 12 | as follows: | |
| 13 | 13 | Sec. 45.001. WHO MAY FILE; VENUE. (a) A parent, managing | |
| 14 | 14 | conservator, or guardian of a child may file a petition requesting a | |
| 15 | 15 | change of name of the child in the county where the child resides. | |
| 16 | 16 | (b) A child who is at least 10 years of age may file a | |
| 17 | 17 | petition requesting a change of the child's name in the county where | |
| 18 | 18 | the child resides. | |
| 19 | 19 | SECTION 2. Subchapter A, Chapter 45, Family Code, is | |
| 20 | 20 | amended by adding Section 45.0025 to read as follows: | |
| 21 | 21 | Sec. 45.0025. REPRESENTATION OF CHILD PETITIONER. The | |
| 22 | 22 | court shall appoint an attorney ad litem to represent the interest | |
| 23 | 23 | of a child who files a petition under Section 45.001(b) at the | |
| 24 | 24 | hearing. | |
| 25 | 25 | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2025. |
