77 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
88 AN ACT
99 relating to requiring a public institution of higher education to
1010 award certain course credit for a dual credit course in computer
1111 science.
1212 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1313 SECTION 1. Subchapter F, Chapter 51, Education Code, is
1414 amended by adding Section 51.306 to read as follows:
1515 Sec. 51.306. AWARD OF UNDERGRADUATE FOREIGN LANGUAGE COURSE
1616 CREDIT FOR DUAL CREDIT COMPUTER SCIENCE COURSE. (a) In this
1717 section, "institution of higher education" has the meaning assigned
1818 by Section 61.003.
1919 (b) An institution of higher education shall award to an
2020 undergraduate student enrolled in the institution undergraduate
2121 course credit toward satisfaction of a foreign language course
2222 requirement of the institution for the student's successful
2323 completion of a dual credit course in computer science.
2424 (c) This section does not apply if the student's major is in
2525 a foreign language.
2626 SECTION 2. Section 51.306, Education Code, as added by this
2727 Act, applies beginning with students initially enrolling in an
2828 undergraduate program at a public institution for the 2025-2026
2929 academic year.
3030 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
3131 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
3232 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
3333 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3434 Act takes effect September 1, 2025.
