77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, The Texas Almanac has informed and enlightened
99 residents of the Lone Star State for nearly 170 years; and
1010 WHEREAS, First published by The Galveston News in 1857, the
1111 almanac initially focused on the workings of government and the
1212 history of Texas; the 19th-century editions of the book featured
1313 numerous first-person accounts of the still-recent Texas
1414 Revolution and the transition to statehood; and
1515 WHEREAS, The almanac was published in Houston and then Austin
1616 during the Civil War-era blockade of Galveston's port; following
1717 the 1873 edition, The Galveston News let the publication lapse, but
1818 its sister paper, The Dallas Morning News, released five editions
1919 between 1904 and 1914; World War I occasioned another hiatus, but
2020 publication resumed in 1925, and during the Great Depression, the
2121 almanac shifted to a biennial cycle, which has been only rarely
2222 interrupted in the decades since; and
2323 WHEREAS, By 1950, the Texas Almanac had taken its modern form
2424 as a reference book covering resources, industries, commerce,
2525 history, government, population, and other subjects relating to the
2626 state's political, civic, and economic development; The Dallas
2727 Morning News donated the Texas Almanac to the Texas State
2828 Historical Association in 2008, a gift that encompassed the
2929 publication's archives, trademark, inventory, and other assets;
3030 dedicated to fostering appreciation and understanding of the
3131 state's rich heritage, TSHA is also the publisher of the widely
3232 circulated Southwestern Historical Quarterly and the popular
3333 Handbook of Texas online encyclopedia; and
3434 WHEREAS, Today, the Texas Almanac remains an indispensable
3535 information resource, featuring a wealth of comprehensive and
3636 readily accessible data and an engaging style that appeals to its
3737 diverse audience of readers and researchers; and
3838 WHEREAS, Since 1857, the Texas Almanac has served as an
3939 essential guide to the Lone Star State, and its continued existence
4040 is a testament to the commitment of its staff, the utility of its
4141 contents, and the enduring fascination that Texas holds for both
4242 its citizens and for readers beyond its borders; now, therefore, be
4343 it
4444 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
4545 hereby designate the Texas Almanac as the official State Book of
4646 Texas.
