78 WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease, the most common form of
89 dementia, is estimated to affect more than seven million Americans
910 and more than 460,000 Texans; and
1011 WHEREAS, A progressive neurological condition, Alzheimer's
1112 disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States; it
1213 is characterized by the accumulation of abnormal proteins and the
1314 gradual deterioration of neurons in the brain; no cure exists for
1415 Alzheimer's, and treatments are aimed at slowing its advancement
1516 and improving the quality of life of those impacted by the disease;
1617 and
1718 WHEREAS, By age 65, one in nine Americans will develop
1819 Alzheimer's disease, and this figure increases to one in three by
1920 the age of 85; as the disease progresses to its final stage,
2021 individuals exhibit severe cognitive and physical impairments and
2122 may require around-the-clock assistance with daily tasks; the
2223 potential lifetime cost of dementia care is between $350,000 and
2324 $800,000 per person, which translates to an economic impact as high
2425 as $560 billion in the state; and
2526 WHEREAS, With the number of Texans living with Alzheimer's
2627 disease projected to increase to 700,000 by 2030, developing new
2728 treatments has become an increasingly urgent priority, and ongoing
2829 research efforts offer hope of one day turning the tide against this
2930 devastating disease; now, therefore, be it
3031 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3132 hereby designate May 6, 2025, as Alzheimer's Advocacy Day and
3233 commend all those who are working to fight this terrible disease and
3334 to support those suffering from it.
