 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 WHEREAS, The city of Corrigan in Polk County has long played
 an important role in the state's timber industry; and
 WHEREAS, Situated amidst the rich pine forests of East Texas,
 Corrigan experienced a significant boom in timber production
 following the completion of the Houston, East and West Texas
 Railway in 1881, and the Trinity and Sabine Railway in 1882; at that
 time, 17 sawmills operated in the area, and timber became a mainstay
 of the local economy; additional mills and plants were constructed
 over the course of the 20th century, including facilities focused
 on particle board and other products; and
 WHEREAS, Today, Corrigan hosts four major timber production
 plants as well as several smaller timber businesses; the main items
 produced in the area include plywood, oriented strand board, and
 lumber, which are used worldwide; in addition, the city's timber
 products support a variety of other industries, from construction
 to paper manufacturing, thereby making a positive impact across
 Texas; and
 WHEREAS, Corrigan's timber businesses have demonstrated a
 steadfast commitment to responsible forestry practices; the
 implementation of eco-friendly procedures helps ensure the
 protection and preservation of renewable timber resources and
 promotes carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation; and
 WHEREAS, The Corrigan-Camden Independent School District
 offers career and technical education opportunities, such as the
 Woodworks Program, to connect students with jobs in the timber
 industry; the district also partners with prominent manufacturers
 RoyOMartin and Georgia-Pacific to provide mentoring programs,
 student incentives, and supplies for student construction
 projects; and
 WHEREAS, Timber production has been integral to the heritage
 and prosperity of Corrigan, and it is indeed fitting that the city
 be recognized for its many contributions to this important sector
 of the Texas economy; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
 hereby designate Corrigan as the official Timber Products Capital
 of Texas; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
 passed by the legislature.
