77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, The city of Corrigan in Polk County has long played
99 an important role in the state's timber industry; and
1010 WHEREAS, Situated amidst the rich pine forests of East Texas,
1111 Corrigan experienced a significant boom in timber production
1212 following the completion of the Houston, East and West Texas
1313 Railway in 1881, and the Trinity and Sabine Railway in 1882; at that
1414 time, 17 sawmills operated in the area, and timber became a mainstay
1515 of the local economy; additional mills and plants were constructed
1616 over the course of the 20th century, including facilities focused
1717 on particle board and other products; and
1818 WHEREAS, Today, Corrigan hosts four major timber production
1919 plants as well as several smaller timber businesses; the main items
2020 produced in the area include plywood, oriented strand board, and
2121 lumber, which are used worldwide; in addition, the city's timber
2222 products support a variety of other industries, from construction
2323 to paper manufacturing, thereby making a positive impact across
2424 Texas; and
2525 WHEREAS, Corrigan's timber businesses have demonstrated a
2626 steadfast commitment to responsible forestry practices; the
2727 implementation of eco-friendly procedures helps ensure the
2828 protection and preservation of renewable timber resources and
2929 promotes carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation; and
3030 WHEREAS, The Corrigan-Camden Independent School District
3131 offers career and technical education opportunities, such as the
3232 Woodworks Program, to connect students with jobs in the timber
3333 industry; the district also partners with prominent manufacturers
3434 RoyOMartin and Georgia-Pacific to provide mentoring programs,
3535 student incentives, and supplies for student construction
3636 projects; and
3737 WHEREAS, Timber production has been integral to the heritage
3838 and prosperity of Corrigan, and it is indeed fitting that the city
3939 be recognized for its many contributions to this important sector
4040 of the Texas economy; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
4242 hereby designate Corrigan as the official Timber Products Capital
4343 of Texas; and, be it further
4444 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4545 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4646 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4747 passed by the legislature.
