8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The longstanding bonds of friendship between the |

10 | 10 | | 1979, continue to yield important economic, social, strategic, and |

11 | 11 | | cultural benefits; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, In 2024, U.S.-Taiwan trade reached $158.6 billion, |
---|
13 | 13 | | with Taiwan ranking as the United States' sixth-largest export |
---|
14 | 14 | | market for American agricultural products and the seventh-largest |
---|
15 | 15 | | merchandise trading partner; that same year, Taiwan was fourth on |
---|
16 | 16 | | the Heritage Foundation's Index of Economic Freedom; the nation |
---|
17 | 17 | | holds an important position in the global economy as a leader in the |
---|
18 | 18 | | world's information and communications technology industry, and it |
---|
19 | 19 | | is a trusted partner for economic cooperation and exchanges in |
---|
20 | 20 | | industries such as those for smart machinery, the Internet of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Things, biotechnology, energy technology, national defense, |
---|
22 | 22 | | semiconductors, and the circular economy; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Taiwanese officials and civil society groups |
---|
24 | 24 | | partner with the United States on a range of issues to promote our |
---|
25 | 25 | | common values of freedom, democracy, and human rights; these |
---|
26 | 26 | | partnerships build on the cooperative tradition of prior |
---|
27 | 27 | | initiatives such as the Global Cooperation and Training Framework, |
---|
28 | 28 | | which advances Taiwanese leadership in such arenas as |
---|
29 | 29 | | democratization, human rights, women's empowerment, and public |
---|
30 | 30 | | health; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Since 1988, Texas and Taiwan have maintained a |
---|
32 | 32 | | sister-state relationship, and their robust trade and investment |
---|
33 | 33 | | partnership provides a solid foundation for a mutually beneficial |
---|
34 | 34 | | bilateral trade agreement to spur job creation, further expand the |
---|
35 | 35 | | global market, and secure international, democratic supply chains; |
---|
36 | 36 | | Taiwan is Texas' seventh-largest trade partner, with two-way trade |
---|
37 | 37 | | reaching over $25.5 billion in 2024; in addition, Governor Greg |
---|
38 | 38 | | Abbott traveled to Taiwan last year to open the State of Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Taiwan Office, which facilitates pragmatic connections and |
---|
40 | 40 | | exchanges between our peoples, institutions, and economies; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Texas and the United States have benefited |
---|
42 | 42 | | immeasurably through decades of unwavering friendship with Taiwan, |
---|
43 | 43 | | and it is a pleasure to join in celebrating the longevity of this |
---|
44 | 44 | | unique and vibrant partnership; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | hereby express its support for the strengthening of our partnership |
---|
47 | 47 | | with Taiwan; and, be it further |
---|
48 | 48 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives and Senate |

49 | 49 | | hereby: |

50 | 50 | | (a) commend Governor Greg Abbott for his efforts to |
---|
51 | 51 | | strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations with Taiwan; |
---|
52 | 52 | | and |
---|
53 | 53 | | (b) celebrate the 46th anniversary of the enactment of the |
---|
54 | 54 | | Taiwan Relations Act and the 37th anniversary of the sister-state |
---|
55 | 55 | | relationship between the State of Texas and Taiwan; and, be it |

57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared |

58 | 58 | | for the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston and the |
---|
59 | 59 | | Capitol Press Corps as an expression of the sentiment of the Texas |
---|
60 | 60 | | House of Representatives and Senate. |
