| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, April 30, 2025, marks the 50th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | end of the Vietnam War, providing a fitting opportunity to honor the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | dedicated members of the U.S. military who courageously served |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | their country in the conflict; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The Vietnam War pitted the communist government of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | North Vietnam and its Viet Cong supporters in South Vietnam against |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | the South Vietnamese government and its main ally, the United |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | States; America's military involvement in the war officially began |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | in August 1964 when U.S. ships were attacked in international |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | waters in the Gulf of Tonkin near North Vietnam; following that |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | incident, the U.S. increased its military presence in South |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Vietnam, and its first regular combat units arrived in the country |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in March 1965; by 1969, more than 500,000 U.S. military personnel |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | were stationed in Vietnam; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The signing of the Paris Peace Accords in January |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 1973 ended direct U.S. military engagement in Vietnam, and on |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | April 30, 1975, the South Vietnamese capital of Saigon fell to the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | North Vietnamese Army, effectively bringing the war to a close; the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | conflict claimed a terrible death toll, and the names of the more |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | than 58,000 U.S. servicemen and women who lost their lives during |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the war are inscribed on the wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | in Washington, D.C.; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Americans owe a profound debt of gratitude to those |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | who fulfilled the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces during the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Vietnam War, and it is indeed appropriate to reflect on their |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | immeasurable fortitude and valor and on the exceptional sacrifice |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | of all those whose lives were touched by the war; now, therefore, be |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |

| 37 | 37 | | hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the conclusion of the |
|---|
