77 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
88 WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have
99 benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many
1010 decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of
1111 recognition; and
1212 WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population
1313 in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who
1414 practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the
1515 cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest
1616 Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques
1717 and Islamic centers are located in the state; and
1818 WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American
1919 community have devoted their lives to service, extending support
2020 and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable
2121 donations and civic organizations; and
2222 WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace
2323 through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an
2424 obligatory religious practice; and
2525 WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished
2626 themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical
2727 professionals, first responders, and teachers who have
2828 demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow
2929 residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in
3030 business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other
3131 fields; and
3232 WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of
3333 the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the
3434 observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to
3535 celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3838 hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section
4040 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
4141 until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally
4242 passed by the legislature.
