| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Muslim American residents of Texas have |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | benefited our state in countless ways over the course of many |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | decades, and their achievements are indeed deserving of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | recognition; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The state with the fifth largest Muslim population |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in the nation, Texas is home to an estimated 500,000 people who |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | practice Islam, with the majority of those residents living in the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | cities of Houston and Dallas; moreover, Texas has the largest |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Muslim population in the southern U.S., and more than 330 mosques |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and Islamic centers are located in the state; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Countless members of Texas' Muslim American |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | community have devoted their lives to service, extending support |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | and assistance to individuals across the state through charitable |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | donations and civic organizations; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, The Muslim community fosters compassion and peace |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | through the tenets of Islam, which include zakat (giving) as an |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | obligatory religious practice; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Muslim Americans in Texas have distinguished |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | themselves in a broad range of endeavors, including as medical |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | professionals, first responders, and teachers who have |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | demonstrated an exceptional commitment to serving their fellow |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | residents; in addition, Muslims have had an important influence in |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | business, politics, technology, the arts, and numerous other |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | fields; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Muslim American community is an integral part of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | the Lone Star State's vibrant and diverse mix of cultures, and the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | observance of Muslim Heritage Month offers a welcome opportunity to |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | celebrate the meaningful contributions of its members; now, |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | hereby designate May as Muslim Heritage Month; and, be it further |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | passed by the legislature. |
