7+ CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
78 WHEREAS, Dr. James Olson, a psychology professor at The
89 University of Texas Permian Basin, is celebrating 50 years of
910 service at the university; and
1011 WHEREAS, A native of Southern California, James Olson earned
1112 his bachelor's degree from the University of California Santa
1213 Barbara in 1969, and during his undergraduate years, he contributed
1314 to a groundbreaking project that sought to teach language to
1415 chimpanzees; he went on to receive a master's degree and doctorate
1516 in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles; in
1617 1973, he became one of the founding faculty members of The
1718 University of Texas Permian Basin; and
1819 WHEREAS, Over the course of his career at UTPB, Dr. Olson has
1920 excelled in his teaching duties and has served as chair of the
2021 psychology, sociology, and criminology departments; in 1994, he
2122 became the first dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and served
2223 in that role for a decade; currently, he holds the R. V. Cardozier
2324 endowed professorship and teaches both undergraduate and master's
2425 level psychology courses; he has coauthored multiple books,
2526 including two titles based on interviews he conducted with
2627 residential burglars, and his work on the subject has received
2728 national media attention; and
2829 WHEREAS, Dr. Olson has earned a number of prestigious
2930 teaching honors, including the Piper Professor Award in 2011 and
3031 the Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of
3132 Texas System in 2012; and
3233 WHEREAS, Dr. James Olson's dedication, expertise, and
3334 commitment to excellence have benefited countless students and
3435 brought him significant renown in the field of psychology, and The
3536 University of Texas Permian Basin is indeed fortunate to count him
3637 among its most esteemed faculty members; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3839 hereby commend Dr. James Olson on 50 years of service to The
3940 University of Texas Permian Basin and extend to him sincere best
4041 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
4142 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4243 prepared for Dr. Olson as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4344 House of Representatives and Senate.
