10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A native of Southern California, James Olson earned |

11 | 12 | | his bachelor's degree from the University of California Santa |

12 | 13 | | Barbara in 1969, and during his undergraduate years, he contributed |

13 | 14 | | to a groundbreaking project that sought to teach language to |
---|
14 | 15 | | chimpanzees; he went on to receive a master's degree and doctorate |
---|
15 | 16 | | in psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles; in |
---|
16 | 17 | | 1973, he became one of the founding faculty members of The |
---|
17 | 18 | | University of Texas Permian Basin; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of his career at UTPB, Dr. Olson has |
---|
19 | 20 | | excelled in his teaching duties and has served as chair of the |
---|
20 | 21 | | psychology, sociology, and criminology departments; in 1994, he |
---|
21 | 22 | | became the first dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and served |
---|
22 | 23 | | in that role for a decade; currently, he holds the R. V. Cardozier |
---|
23 | 24 | | endowed professorship and teaches both undergraduate and master's |
---|
24 | 25 | | level psychology courses; he has coauthored multiple books, |
---|
25 | 26 | | including two titles based on interviews he conducted with |
---|
26 | 27 | | residential burglars, and his work on the subject has received |
---|
27 | 28 | | national media attention; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Olson has earned a number of prestigious |

29 | 30 | | teaching honors, including the Piper Professor Award in 2011 and |
---|
30 | 31 | | the Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award from The University of |

31 | 32 | | Texas System in 2012; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Dr. James Olson's dedication, expertise, and |

33 | 34 | | commitment to excellence have benefited countless students and |

34 | 35 | | brought him significant renown in the field of psychology, and The |

35 | 36 | | University of Texas Permian Basin is indeed fortunate to count him |

36 | 37 | | among its most esteemed faculty members; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
