78 WHEREAS, Kathy Shannon retired as executive director of the
89 Permian Basin Petroleum Museum in Midland on October 1, 2023,
910 drawing to a close many years of outstanding service; and
1011 WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon joined the Petroleum Museum as director
1112 of education in 1995, and in that role, she oversaw the addition of
1213 the organization's transportation wing, which uses Chaparral race
1314 cars to educate visitors on the scientific principles of
1415 aerodynamics and physics; in November 2004, she assumed her
1516 position as executive director; over the course of a tenure
1617 spanning nearly two decades, the museum opened an educational hall
1718 and a mineral gallery highlighting mineral specimens from across
1819 the globe, underwent an $18 million renovation of its petroleum
1920 exhibits, and launched its state-of-the-art STEAM education
2021 center; and
2122 WHEREAS, Over the years, Ms. Shannon has contributed to her
2223 profession as board president of the Texas Association of Museums
2324 from 2011 to 2012 and as a member of the Permian Basin Museum
2425 Association; in 2016, she was presented with the TAM President's
2526 Award; and
2627 WHEREAS, Ms. Shannon has also given back to the greater
2728 community by serving on the board of the Trinity School of Midland
2829 and by collaborating with the Texas Education Agency on revising
2930 the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills test through the Texas
3031 Energy Council; and
3132 WHEREAS, The Petroleum Museum has benefited immeasurably
3233 from Kathy Shannon's leadership and her unwavering commitment to
3334 the institution's mission, and she may indeed reflect with pride on
3435 all that she has accomplished; now, therefore, be it
3536 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3637 hereby congratulate Kathy Shannon on her retirement from the
3738 Permian Basin Petroleum Museum and extend to her sincere best
3839 wishes for the future; and, be it further
3940 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4041 prepared for Ms. Shannon as an expression of high regard by the
4142 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
