78 WHEREAS, Stewart Doreen retired as editor of the Midland
89 Reporter-Telegram at the end of 2023, following a noteworthy
910 29-year career with the newspaper; and
1011 WHEREAS, In January 1995, Mr. Doreen joined the
1112 Reporter-Telegram and covered a Midland High School basketball game
1213 as his first assignment; he went on to write thousands of articles,
1314 reporting on a wide range of matters, from sports to government and
1415 the energy industry; in covering city hall, he strove to be a
1516 watchdog for the interests of his fellow citizens; and
1617 WHEREAS, After serving as managing editor, he was named
1718 editor of the paper and guided it skillfully through today's
1819 rapidly evolving media environment; its print and online
1920 circulation reached an eight-year high under his leadership, with
2021 hundreds of thousands of visits to its mrt.com website every month;
2122 and
2223 WHEREAS, Mr. Doreen has been an ardent champion of Midland,
2324 raising awareness of its exceptional people, thriving business
2425 sector, and vibrant nonprofit and educational organizations; in
2526 recognition of his contributions, the mayor proclaimed
2627 December 21, 2023, as Stewart Doreen Day; and
2728 WHEREAS, Since retiring from the paper, Mr. Doreen has served
2829 as strategic communications officer for the City of Midland, and he
2930 has brought a wealth of experience and deep knowledge to his
3031 position; as he continues to take on the exciting challenges of his
3132 new role, he may indeed reflect with pride on his many
3233 accomplishments to date; now, therefore, be it
3334 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
3435 hereby congratulate Stewart Doreen on his retirement as editor of
3536 the Midland Reporter-Telegram and extend to him sincere best wishes
3637 for continued success; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for Mr. Doreen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3940 House of Representatives and Senate.
