66 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
77 WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is renowned for the beauty and
88 diversity of its many public gardens and parks and for the
99 dedication its residents have demonstrated to preserving and
1010 sustaining these oases of greenery; and
1111 WHEREAS, While outstanding gardens can be found in many
1212 communities throughout the state, the city of Nacogdoches has
1313 distinguished itself for the number and variety of its green and
1414 flowering public spaces; and
1515 WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is located on a site once occupied by
1616 members of the Nacogdoche tribe, a group of the Caddo people whose
1717 culture was based on farming; a Spanish mission was established
1818 there in 1716, and the town has been a civil settlement since 1779;
1919 as early as 1853, the city's gardens were noted in the diary of a
2020 famous visitor, Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who
2121 later designed New York's Central Park and numerous other iconic
2222 public spaces around the nation; and
2323 WHEREAS, Today, Nacogdoches helps to preserve the state's
2424 horticultural heritage through re-creations of traditional gardens
2525 at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens, the Sterne-Hoya
2626 House Museum and Library, Millard's Crossing Historic Village, and
2727 the Old Nacogdoches University Building; and
2828 WHEREAS, The city's splendid green spaces also include
2929 Eugenia Sterne Park, Margil Park, Zion Hill Baptist Church
3030 Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, and the Pocket Park and the Plaza
3131 Principal in the historic downtown; moreover, Liberty Memorial
3232 Garden commemorates with dignity and grace the lives lost during
3333 the tragic events of 9/11; and
3434 WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is home to Stephen F. Austin State
3535 University, which is landscaped with overstory and ornamental trees
3636 to maintain the Pineywoods ecosystem and the natural beauty of the
3737 campus; the university's 138 acres of gardens include the SFA Mast
3838 Arboretum, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, the Gayla Mize
3939 Garden, the Jim and Beth Kingham Children's Garden, the Plantery,
4040 and Jimmy Hinds Park; in addition, the Baldcypress Collection and
4141 the Crape Myrtle Collection are renowned for their impressive
4242 display of those species; each year, SFA Gardens hosts programs
4343 that provide information on sustainable gardening and the
4444 preservation of native plants, while the Nacogdoches Independent
4545 School District supports initiatives that encourage students to
4646 maintain and study gardens on the grounds of their schools; and
4747 WHEREAS, Home of the annual Nacogdoches Azalea Trail each
4848 March, the community was the first to be recognized as part of the
4949 Azalea Society of America's Azalea City Program in 2004 and was
5050 recertified in 2012; the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the SFA
5151 campus is the largest such garden in the state, with more than 7,000
5252 evergreen and native azaleas on display; another of the city's
5353 notable sites is the Nacogdoches County Master Gardeners
5454 Demonstration Garden on the former site of Aqua Vitae Park, which
5555 was developed by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in
5656 cooperation with the city and Nacogdoches County; and
5757 WHEREAS, The thoughtful cultivation of the splendor of nature
5858 is one of the most sublime expressions of the human spirit, and the
5959 skill and devotion with which the city of Nacogdoches has showcased
6060 its lovely trees and flowering plants is indeed deserving of
6161 special recognition; now, therefore, be it
6262 RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
6363 hereby designate Nacogdoches as the official Garden Capital of
6464 Texas; and, be it further
6565 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of
6666 Section 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in
6767 effect until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is
6868 finally passed by the legislature.
