6	6	CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
7	7	WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is renowned for the beauty and
8	8	diversity of its many public gardens and parks and for the
9	9	dedication its residents have demonstrated to preserving and
10	10	sustaining these oases of greenery; and
11	11	WHEREAS, While outstanding gardens can be found in many
12	12	communities throughout the state, the city of Nacogdoches has
13	13	distinguished itself for the number and variety of its green and
14	14	flowering public spaces; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is located on a site once occupied by
16	16	members of the Nacogdoche tribe, a group of the Caddo people whose
17	17	culture was based on farming; a Spanish mission was established
18	18	there in 1716, and the town has been a civil settlement since 1779;
19	19	as early as 1853, the city's gardens were noted in the diary of a
20	20	famous visitor, Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who
21	21	later designed New York's Central Park and numerous other iconic
22	22	public spaces around the nation; and
23	23	WHEREAS, Today, Nacogdoches helps to preserve the state's
24	24	horticultural heritage through re-creations of traditional gardens
25	25	at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens, the Sterne-Hoya
26	26	House Museum and Library, Millard's Crossing Historic Village, and
27	27	the Old Nacogdoches University Building; and
28	28	WHEREAS, The city's splendid green spaces also include
29	29	Eugenia Sterne Park, Margil Park, Zion Hill Baptist Church
30	30	Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, and the Pocket Park and the Plaza
31	31	Principal in the historic downtown; moreover, Liberty Memorial
32	32	Garden commemorates with dignity and grace the lives lost during
33	33	the tragic events of 9/11; and
34	34	WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is home to Stephen F. Austin State
35	35	University, which is landscaped with overstory and ornamental trees
36	36	to maintain the Pineywoods ecosystem and the natural beauty of the
37	37	campus; the university's 138 acres of gardens include the SFA Mast
38	38	Arboretum, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, the Gayla Mize
39	39	Garden, the Jim and Beth Kingham Children's Garden, the Plantery,
40	40	and Jimmy Hinds Park; in addition, the Baldcypress Collection and
41	41	the Crape Myrtle Collection are renowned for their impressive
42	42	display of those species; each year, SFA Gardens hosts programs
43	43	that provide information on sustainable gardening and the
44	44	preservation of native plants, while the Nacogdoches Independent
45	45	School District supports initiatives that encourage students to
46	46	maintain and study gardens on the grounds of their schools; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Home of the annual Nacogdoches Azalea Trail each
48	48	March, the community was the first to be recognized as part of the
49	49	Azalea Society of America's Azalea City Program in 2004 and was
50	50	recertified in 2012; the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the SFA
51	51	campus is the largest such garden in the state, with more than 7,000
52	52	evergreen and native azaleas on display; another of the city's
53	53	notable sites is the Nacogdoches County Master Gardeners
54	54	Demonstration Garden on the former site of Aqua Vitae Park, which
55	55	was developed by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in
56	56	cooperation with the city and Nacogdoches County; and
57	57	WHEREAS, The thoughtful cultivation of the splendor of nature
58	58	is one of the most sublime expressions of the human spirit, and the
59	59	skill and devotion with which the city of Nacogdoches has showcased
60	60	its lovely trees and flowering plants is indeed deserving of
61	61	special recognition; now, therefore, be it
62	62	RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas
63	63	hereby designate Nacogdoches as the official Garden Capital of
64	64	Texas; and, be it further
65	65	RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of
66	66	Section 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in
67	67	effect until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is
68	68	finally passed by the legislature.
