8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Texas School for the Deaf alumnus Robert Rives was a |

9 | 9 | | dedicated educator and a trailblazing figure in the state's deaf |

10 | 10 | | and hard of hearing community; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Rives became the first TSD alumnus to attend the |
---|
12 | 12 | | prestigious National College, which is today known as Gallaudet |
---|
13 | 13 | | University, in Washington, D.C.; following his graduation in 1893, |
---|
14 | 14 | | he embarked on a rewarding career as a teacher at TSD that spanned |
---|
15 | 15 | | more than four decades; he also served as the school's first |
---|
16 | 16 | | football coach from 1894 to 1898, achieving a record of 10-8-1; |
---|
17 | 17 | | among his many honors, he was inducted into the Texas School for the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Deaf Alumni Association Hall of Fame in the sports category in 1999; |

19 | 19 | | and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Robert Rives continues to be a source of inspiration |
---|
21 | 21 | | to young athletes at the Texas School for the Deaf, and the naming |
---|
22 | 22 | | of the TSD middle school gymnasium in his honor would be a fitting |
---|
23 | 23 | | tribute to his legacy; now, therefore, be it |
---|
24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
25 | 25 | | hereby direct the Texas School for the Deaf to name its middle |
---|
26 | 26 | | school gymnasium the Robert Rives Gymnasium; and, be it further |
---|
27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official |
---|
28 | 28 | | copy of this resolution to the Governing Board of the Texas School |
---|
29 | 29 | | for the Deaf. |
