8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The development of the city of Pineland has been |
---|
9 | 9 | | profoundly shaped by its lumber industry, which has formed the |
---|
10 | 10 | | basis of the community's economy since its founding at the turn of |
---|
11 | 11 | | the 20th century; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Located in southwestern Sabine County, Pineland |
---|
13 | 13 | | traces its origins to a sawmill and lumber camp that was established |
---|
14 | 14 | | on the Gulf, Beaumont and Great Northern Railway, which laid tracks |
---|
15 | 15 | | through the county in 1902; originally known as John Adam's Mill, |
---|
16 | 16 | | the community acquired its Pineland name when a post office opened |
---|
17 | 17 | | in 1904; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Nestled in the heart of the East Texas forests, |
---|
19 | 19 | | Pineland grew rapidly as a company town centered around the Temple |
---|
20 | 20 | | Lumber Company, which was established in 1910 when Thomas L. L. |
---|
21 | 21 | | Temple took control of a previously existing mill operation; |
---|
22 | 22 | | through the decades, the company's products included hardwood, |
---|
23 | 23 | | plywood, pine lumber, particleboard, and hardwood flooring, and a |
---|
24 | 24 | | number of new processing facilities were added beginning in the |
---|
25 | 25 | | 1960s; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The company became Temple Industries in 1963, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | additional name changes took place over the next two decades due to |
---|
28 | 28 | | a series of acquisitions and mergers; since 2013, Georgia-Pacific |
---|
29 | 29 | | has operated the mill, and when a $120 million expansion of the |
---|
30 | 30 | | Pineland Lumber Complex was completed in 2023, it became the |
---|
31 | 31 | | largest sawmill in the southern United States; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Drawing on the region's vast timber resources, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Pineland has played an integral role in the state's lumber industry |
---|
34 | 34 | | for more than a century, and the city's residents are justifiably |
---|
35 | 35 | | proud of their community's contributions to the Texas economy; now, |
---|
36 | 36 | | therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | hereby designate Pineland as the official Lumber Capital of Texas; |
---|
39 | 39 | | and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of Section |
---|
41 | 41 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
---|
42 | 42 | | until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is finally |
---|
43 | 43 | | passed by the legislature. |
