8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is renowned for the beauty and |

9 | 9 | | diversity of its many public gardens and parks and for the |
---|
10 | 10 | | dedication its residents have demonstrated to preserving and |
---|
11 | 11 | | sustaining these oases of greenery; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, While outstanding gardens can be found in many |
---|
13 | 13 | | communities throughout the state, the city of Nacogdoches has |
---|
14 | 14 | | distinguished itself for the number and variety of its green and |
---|
15 | 15 | | flowering public spaces; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is located on a site once occupied by |
---|
17 | 17 | | members of the Nacogdoche tribe, a group of the Caddo people whose |
---|
18 | 18 | | culture was based on farming; a Spanish mission was established |
---|
19 | 19 | | there in 1716, and the town has been a civil settlement since 1779; |
---|
20 | 20 | | as early as 1853, the city's gardens were noted in the diary of a |
---|
21 | 21 | | famous visitor, Frederick Law Olmsted, the landscape architect who |
---|
22 | 22 | | later designed New York's Central Park and numerous other iconic |
---|
23 | 23 | | public spaces around the nation; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, Nacogdoches helps to preserve the state's |
---|
25 | 25 | | horticultural heritage through re-creations of traditional gardens |
---|
26 | 26 | | at the Durst-Taylor Historic House and Gardens, the Sterne-Hoya |
---|
27 | 27 | | House Museum and Library, Millard's Crossing Historic Village, and |
---|
28 | 28 | | the Old Nacogdoches University Building; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The city's splendid green spaces also include |
---|
30 | 30 | | Eugenia Sterne Park, Margil Park, Zion Hill Baptist Church |
---|
31 | 31 | | Cemetery, Oak Grove Cemetery, and the Pocket Park and the Plaza |
---|
32 | 32 | | Principal in the historic downtown; moreover, Liberty Memorial |
---|
33 | 33 | | Garden commemorates with dignity and grace the lives lost during |
---|
34 | 34 | | the tragic events of 9/11; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Nacogdoches is home to Stephen F. Austin State |
---|
36 | 36 | | University, which is landscaped with overstory and ornamental trees |
---|
37 | 37 | | to maintain the Pineywoods ecosystem and the natural beauty of the |
---|
38 | 38 | | campus; the university's 138 acres of gardens include the SFA Mast |
---|
39 | 39 | | Arboretum, the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, the Gayla Mize |
---|
40 | 40 | | Garden, the Jim and Beth Kingham Children's Garden, the Plantery, |
---|
41 | 41 | | and Jimmy Hinds Park; in addition, the Baldcypress Collection and |
---|
42 | 42 | | the Crape Myrtle Collection are renowned for their impressive |
---|
43 | 43 | | display of those species; each year, SFA Gardens hosts programs |
---|
44 | 44 | | that provide information on sustainable gardening and the |
---|
45 | 45 | | preservation of native plants, while the Nacogdoches Independent |
---|
46 | 46 | | School District supports initiatives that encourage students to |
---|
47 | 47 | | maintain and study gardens on the grounds of their schools; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, Home of the annual Nacogdoches Azalea Trail each |
---|
49 | 49 | | March, the community was the first to be recognized as part of the |
---|
50 | 50 | | Azalea Society of America's Azalea City Program in 2004 and was |
---|
51 | 51 | | recertified in 2012; the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden on the SFA |
---|
52 | 52 | | campus is the largest such garden in the state, with more than 7,000 |
---|
53 | 53 | | evergreen and native azaleas on display; another of the city's |
---|
54 | 54 | | notable sites is the Nacogdoches County Master Gardeners |
---|
55 | 55 | | Demonstration Garden on the former site of Aqua Vitae Park, which |
---|
56 | 56 | | was developed by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in |
---|
57 | 57 | | cooperation with the city and Nacogdoches County; and |
---|
58 | 58 | | WHEREAS, The thoughtful cultivation of the splendor of nature |
---|
59 | 59 | | is one of the most sublime expressions of the human spirit, and the |
---|
60 | 60 | | skill and devotion with which the city of Nacogdoches has showcased |
---|
61 | 61 | | its lovely trees and flowering plants is indeed deserving of |
---|
62 | 62 | | special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
---|
63 | 63 | | RESOLVED, That the 89th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
64 | 64 | | hereby designate Nacogdoches as the official Garden Capital of |
---|
65 | 65 | | Texas; and, be it further |
---|
66 | 66 | | RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of |
---|
67 | 67 | | Section 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in |
---|
68 | 68 | | effect until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is |
---|
69 | 69 | | finally passed by the legislature. |
