77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, Curtis King of The Black Academy of Arts and Letters
99 in Dallas has been selected for a 2025 Honorable Mention by the Tony
1010 Awards Excellence in Theatre Education jury; and
1111 WHEREAS, This national accolade recognizes K-12 educators
1212 who have made a monumental impact in the lives of students while
1313 upholding the highest standards of the profession; among the judges
1414 for this category are representatives of the American Theatre Wing,
1515 the Broadway League, and Carnegie Mellon University; Mr. King and
1616 The Black Academy of Arts and Letters will be featured in the Tony
1717 Awards Playbill and on the Tony Awards website; and
1818 WHEREAS, The president of The Black Academy of Arts and
1919 Letters, Mr. King established the school in 1977; over the years,
2020 its youth programs have benefited countless talented young artists
2121 from the area, including acclaimed actor Regina Taylor, as well as
2222 singer-songwriter Erykah Badu and musician Roy Hargrove; Mr. King
2323 previously received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
2424 National Association of Dramatic and Speech Arts, along with a host
2525 of other honors; and
2626 WHEREAS, Curtis King has demonstrated an enduring commitment
2727 to the American theater and to arts education, and he may indeed
2828 take pride in this noteworthy acknowledgment; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
3030 Legislature hereby congratulate Curtis King on his receipt of a
3131 2025 Honorable Mention from the Tony Awards Excellence in Theatre
3232 Education program and extend to him sincere best wishes for the
3333 future; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for Mr. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3636 House of Representatives.
