| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, World Ovarian Cancer Day is being observed on May 8, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 2025; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | cancer-related death in women in the United States, accounting for |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer; a woman's risk of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | being diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime is about 1 in |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 91; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 21,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in 2025, and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | approximately 12,700 individuals, including some 1,100 Texans, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | will die from the disease; survival rates vary greatly depending on |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the stage of diagnosis, and while the five-year survival rate is |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | approximately 50 percent, it is more than 90 percent when caught |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | early; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Currently, there is no reliable early detection test |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | for ovarian cancer; however, improved awareness of the symptoms, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | which may include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary issues, can lead to a |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | faster diagnosis and improved outcomes for women; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Ongoing investments in ovarian cancer research and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | education are critical in the fight against this life-threatening |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | disease, and the observance of World Ovarian Cancer Day unites |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | people across the globe in their commitment to heightening |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | awareness of this serious health issue; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 8, 2025, as World Ovarian Cancer |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Day and urge all Texans to learn more about the disease. |
