77 R E S O L U T I O N
88 WHEREAS, World Ovarian Cancer Day is being observed on May 8,
99 2025; and
1010 WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of
1111 cancer-related death in women in the United States, accounting for
1212 more deaths than any other gynecologic cancer; a woman's risk of
1313 being diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime is about 1 in
1414 91; and
1515 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that nearly
1616 21,000 cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in 2025, and
1717 approximately 12,700 individuals, including some 1,100 Texans,
1818 will die from the disease; survival rates vary greatly depending on
1919 the stage of diagnosis, and while the five-year survival rate is
2020 approximately 50 percent, it is more than 90 percent when caught
2121 early; and
2222 WHEREAS, Currently, there is no reliable early detection test
2323 for ovarian cancer; however, improved awareness of the symptoms,
2424 which may include bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, trouble
2525 eating or feeling full quickly, and urinary issues, can lead to a
2626 faster diagnosis and improved outcomes for women; and
2727 WHEREAS, Ongoing investments in ovarian cancer research and
2828 education are critical in the fight against this life-threatening
2929 disease, and the observance of World Ovarian Cancer Day unites
3030 people across the globe in their commitment to heightening
3131 awareness of this serious health issue; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
3333 Legislature hereby recognize May 8, 2025, as World Ovarian Cancer
3434 Day and urge all Texans to learn more about the disease.
