| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Galveston County are gathering in |

| 8 | 9 | | Austin on March 6, 2025, to celebrate Galveston County Day at the |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Covering approximately 870 square miles of lush |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | grasslands, warm beaches, and sparkling waters, Galveston County |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | was first inhabited by the Karankawa people and later, several |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | Spanish expeditions passed through the area; the county was formed |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | out of portions of Harrisburg, Liberty, and Brazoria Counties in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | 1838 and named after Bernardo de Gálvez, who supported the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | United States in the Revolutionary War; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Galveston, the county's seat, is the birthplace of |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | the national holiday Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | Union Major General Gordon Granger issued General Order No. 3, |

| 20 | 21 | | announcing the freedom of more than 250,000 enslaved Black people |

| 21 | 22 | | in the state; by the late 1800s, the city had become a center for |

| 22 | 23 | | banking and a national hub for immigration; the town was |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | devastated, however, during the Galveston hurricane of 1900, the |

| 24 | 25 | | deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, and thousands of lives |

| 25 | 26 | | were lost; in the wake of the storm, the Galveston seawall was |

|---|
| 27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, The ports of Galveston and Texas City contributed |

| 28 | 29 | | greatly to the rebuilding of the area after the hurricane, and along |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | with the chemical and petrochemical complex, continue to be |

| 30 | 31 | | important to the economic development of the county; additionally, |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | maritime activities, tourism, and retail sales provide jobs for |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | many residents of the region; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Today, Galveston County is a center for medical |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | services and marine research and is home to a number of institutions |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | of higher education; these include The University of Texas Medical |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | Branch, which encompasses schools of medicine, nursing, health |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | professions, public and population health, and graduate biomedical |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | sciences, and Texas A&M University at Galveston, which is one of six |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | maritime academies in the nation, as well as College of the Mainland |
|---|

|---|
| 41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Visitors are drawn to the county's natural beauty |

| 42 | 43 | | and miles of beaches and also enjoy such family-friendly |

| 43 | 44 | | attractions as the Galveston County Fair & Rodeo, the Galveston |

| 44 | 45 | | Island Wild Texas Shrimp Festival, and the Blessing of the Fleet |

| 46 | 47 | | include the Strand Historic District, Schlitterbahn Waterpark, the |

| 47 | 48 | | Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier, and Moody Gardens; and |

| 48 | 49 | | WHEREAS, Galveston County is blessed with a rich history and |

| 49 | 50 | | abundant natural resources, and its citizens may take great pride |
