8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lisa McWashington of Galena Park has distinguished |

9 | 9 | | herself as a member of the Texas Partners in Policymaking Class of |

10 | 10 | | 2025; and |

11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Organized by the Texas Council for Developmental |
---|
12 | 12 | | Disabilities, Texas Partners in Policymaking is a leadership |
---|
13 | 13 | | training program designed to empower adults with developmental |
---|
14 | 14 | | disabilities and their families as advocates for policy change; |
---|
15 | 15 | | over the course of seven months, participants learn about |
---|
16 | 16 | | disability history, systems, and policy while meeting with a |
---|
17 | 17 | | variety of subject matter experts; many graduates have gone on to |
---|
18 | 18 | | serve on various boards, councils, task forces, and advisory |
---|
19 | 19 | | committees, and some have run for public office; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Ms. McWashington participated in the Texas Partners |
---|
21 | 21 | | in Policymaking program as a self-advocate and parent, and she |
---|
22 | 22 | | completed a capstone initiative that champions the rights of |
---|
23 | 23 | | individuals with addiction and criminal records from more than 10 |
---|
24 | 24 | | years prior to serve as guardians for people with disabilities; |
---|
25 | 25 | | drawing from her experience raising her daughter, Ashley, she |
---|
26 | 26 | | argues for a more rehabilitative and fair approach to guardianship |
---|
27 | 27 | | decisions, highlighting the importance of an individual's ability |
---|
28 | 28 | | to provide support after undergoing rehabilitation and personal |
---|
29 | 29 | | growth; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, By taking part in the Texas Partners in Policymaking |
---|
31 | 31 | | program, Lisa McWashington has developed the knowledge and skills |
---|
32 | 32 | | necessary to effect positive change in her community and beyond, |
---|
33 | 33 | | and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing her for this notable |
---|
34 | 34 | | accomplishment; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Lisa McWashington on graduating as |
---|
37 | 37 | | a member of the Texas Partners in Policymaking Class of 2025 and |
---|
38 | 38 | | extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
