| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, March 2, 2026, marks the 190th anniversary of that |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | historic day in 1836 when residents of Texas officially declared |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | their independence from Mexico, thereby giving birth to the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | independent republic that would stand on its own for more than nine |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | years before becoming the 28th state of the United States of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | America; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, The proud Texans who issued the call for |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | independence were impelled by Mexican dictator Antonio López de |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Santa Anna's adoption of a new constitution in 1836, which |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | eliminated all vestiges of states' rights for Texas and other |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Mexican states; members of the Convention of 1836 met at |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Washington-on-the-Brazos on March 1 of that fateful year and wrote |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | the Texas Declaration of Independence; as they gathered, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | valiant defenders of the Alamo faced off against the troops of Santa |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Anna, thereby reaching a crucial point in their campaign for |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | greater political freedom; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A free and independent Republic of Texas was |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | officially declared on March 2, 1836; stating the views of the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | delegates in no uncertain terms, the Texas Declaration of |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Independence listed their grievances against the Mexican |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | government and announced their bold conclusion: "that the people of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Texas do now constitute a free, Sovereign, and independent |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | republic, and are fully invested with all the rights and attributes |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | which properly belong to independent nations"; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The 59 signatories of the Texas Declaration of |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Independence enunciated a vision of liberty, independence, and just |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | government, further spurring their fellow Texans to press forward |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | for the next six weeks on the battlefield; the victory over Santa |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Anna at San Jacinto on April 21 solidified Texas' de facto |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | independence, and Texans began a dramatic new course of life in the |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | land they called home; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 190th anniversary of the |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | adoption of the Texas Declaration of Independence and pay tribute |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | to the immense contributions of those individuals who helped to |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | found the Republic of Texas. |
