12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Categorized as an R1 institution by the Carnegie |

13 | 14 | | Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, UTSA boasts a |
---|
14 | 15 | | rapidly growing portfolio of research in cybersecurity, artificial |
---|
15 | 16 | | intelligence, space exploration, and biomedical fields; at the |
---|
16 | 17 | | center of one of the largest cybersecurity ecosystems in the |
---|
17 | 18 | | nation, the university is home to the National Security |
---|
18 | 19 | | Collaboration Center, the Cybersecurity Manufacturing Innovation |
---|
19 | 20 | | Institute, and the School of Data Science, the first of its kind in |
---|
20 | 21 | | Texas; demonstrating a commitment to high-impact research and |
---|
21 | 22 | | applied technology development, the university is launching the |
---|
22 | 23 | | College of AI, Cyber, and Computing in fall 2025; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, UT Health San Antonio is a nationally ranked |

24 | 25 | | academic health center with six professional health education |

25 | 26 | | schools; it is also a global leader for clinical medicine research, |

26 | 27 | | including in such specialties as cancer, aging, Alzheimer's and |
---|
27 | 28 | | dementia, infectious diseases, and mental and behavioral health; |

29 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In summer 2025, UTSA and UT Health San Antonio will |

30 | 31 | | combine to become the third-largest public research university in |
---|
31 | 32 | | the state; the new entity will encompass more than 40,000 students, |
---|
32 | 33 | | nearly 16,000 employees, $467 million in research expenditures, a |
---|
33 | 34 | | $2.2 billion budget, and a $1.1 billion endowment; its direct |
---|
34 | 35 | | economic impact to Texas is estimated to be over $6 billion; and |

35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, UTSA and UT Health San Antonio partnered to create |

36 | 37 | | the UT School of Public Health San Antonio, which educates |
---|
37 | 38 | | professionals who identify health trends, develop prevention |
---|
38 | 39 | | strategies, and implement programs to address health issues across |
---|
39 | 40 | | populations; another collaboration of UTSA and UT Health, the San |

40 | 41 | | Antonio Life Sciences Institute has expanded the state's health |
---|
41 | 42 | | sciences workforce in the areas of neuroscience, cancer prevention, |

42 | 43 | | infectious disease, and regenerative medicine; and |

43 | 44 | | WHEREAS, The University of Texas at San Antonio and The |

44 | 45 | | University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio have |

45 | 46 | | provided countless students with a strong foundation for |

46 | 47 | | achievement, and the merger of these outstanding institutions will |

47 | 48 | | enable them to make an even greater impact in the local community |

48 | 49 | | and beyond; now, therefore, be it |

49 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

50 | 51 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 4, 2025, as UTSA and UT |

51 | 52 | | Health San Antonio Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm |

52 | 53 | | welcome to the visiting delegation. |
