67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Susan Christian retired as director of the Houston
89 Mayor's Office of Special Events on January 17, 2025, drawing to a
910 close an exemplary career with the city spanning nearly four
1011 decades; and
1112 WHEREAS, Ms. Christian first joined the Houston Parks and
1213 Recreation Department in 1985, and was tasked with creating MOSE in
1314 1992; over the course of her tenure as director, she has been
1415 responsible for producing numerous local events, such as the
1516 July 4th Freedom Over Texas celebration, the H-E-B Thanksgiving Day
1617 Parade, and Cigna Sunday in the Park, as well as all eight of
1718 Houston's national sports championship victory parades; under her
1819 leadership, the city serves as host to a number of national and
1920 international tournaments, including NCAA Championship, NFL Super
2021 Bowl, and FIFA World Cup games; and
2122 WHEREAS, In 2015, Ms. Christian cofounded Houston Civic
2223 Events, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating the
2324 city's talent pool through mentorship programs, workshops, and
2425 alliances with educational institutions; in addition, she has
2526 served on boards and committees for various groups, among them The
2627 Heritage Society at Sam Houston Park and the Houston Livestock Show
2728 and Rodeo; and
2829 WHEREAS, Ms. Christian is a graduate of Texas Christian
2930 University, where she earned her bachelor's degree; in all her
3031 endeavors, she enjoys the love and support of her partner, Laura
3132 Spanjian, as well as that of her two sons; and
3233 WHEREAS, Through her commitment to community enrichment,
3334 inclusivity, and the arts, Ms. Christian has furthered Houston's
3435 reputation as a destination for world-class events, and she may
3536 take well-deserved pride in her exceptional record of achievement
3637 as she embarks on the next exciting chapter of her life; now,
3738 therefore, be it
3839 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
3940 Legislature hereby congratulate Susan Christian on her retirement
4041 as director of the Houston Mayor's Office of Special Events and
4142 extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for Ms. Christian as an expression of high regard by the
4445 Texas House of Representatives.
