7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Lanora C. Pettit concluded her service as principal |

8 | 9 | | deputy solicitor general of the Office of the Attorney General of |

9 | 10 | | Texas on January 24, 2025, and this occasion provides a fitting |

10 | 11 | | opportunity to recognize her many outstanding contributions; and |

11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Pettit first joined the Office of the Attorney |
---|
12 | 13 | | General in July 2019 as assistant solicitor general, and she was |
---|
13 | 14 | | promoted to principal deputy solicitor general in May 2021; her |
---|
14 | 15 | | responsibilities included representing the state and its agencies |
---|
15 | 16 | | and officials in both state and federal court on a variety of |
---|
16 | 17 | | topics, and she also handled several matters on behalf of state |
---|
17 | 18 | | universities, such as arguing The University of Texas System v. The |
---|
18 | 19 | | Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity and Jon Cassidy |
---|
19 | 20 | | in 2023; an accomplished appellate lawyer, she authored hundreds of |
---|
20 | 21 | | briefs and argued more than 40 appeals over the course of her |
---|
21 | 22 | | tenure, including numerous cases before the Supreme Court of the |
---|
22 | 23 | | United States, the en banc U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth |
---|
23 | 24 | | Circuit, and the Texas Supreme Court; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Pettit holds a bachelor's degree in history from |
---|
25 | 26 | | the College of William and Mary, and she graduated summa cum laude |
---|
26 | 27 | | both from there and from the University of Virginia School of Law; |
---|
27 | 28 | | she embarked on her legal career as a clerk for the U.S. Court of |
---|
28 | 29 | | Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and she went on to practice at a |
---|
29 | 30 | | large law firm in New York for two years and then at a litigation |

30 | 31 | | boutique in Washington, D.C., for five years, handling commercial |
---|
31 | 32 | | legal proceedings with a focus on securities and bankruptcy law; |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The skill, professionalism, and commitment to |

34 | 35 | | excellence demonstrated by Lanora Pettit made her an important |

35 | 36 | | asset to the Texas attorney general's office, and she may reflect |

36 | 37 | | with pride on her accomplishments, knowing that she rendered |

37 | 38 | | invaluable service to her colleagues and fellow citizens; now, |
