67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, Residents of Laredo lost an admired philanthropist
89 with the passing of Peggy Jean Newman on April 19, 2024, at the age
910 of 92; and
1011 WHEREAS, The daughter of William and Beulah Beheler, the
1112 former Peggy Beheler was born on August 6, 1931; she married the
1213 love of her life, Bernard "B. P." Newman, and they were blessed with
1314 four children, Joel, David, Mark, and Nancy; through the years, her
1415 treasured family grew to include 11 grandchildren and 21
1516 great-grandchildren; and
1617 WHEREAS, Mrs. Newman invested in real estate through various
1718 entities, and she served B. P. Newman Investment Company as a member
1819 of the board and as president; in 1997, she became the first woman
1920 to serve on the board of the International Bank of Commerce, and she
2021 continued in that position for two decades; and
2122 WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Newman
2223 served on the boards of many nonprofit organizations, including the
2324 United Way of Laredo; she donated land to the group and was actively
2425 involved in the effort to build a home for its operations; she also
2526 gave generously of her time and talents to such organizations as the
2627 Salvation Army, Casa de Misericordia, Habitat for Humanity, the
2728 Laredo Food Bank, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation; in 2020, she was
2829 recognized by Catholic Charities for her years of selfless work to
2930 advance its mission; moreover, she and her husband were champions
3031 of higher education, playing important roles in the development of
3132 Texas A&M International University, holding membership in the TAMIU
3233 Heritage Society, and establishing two endowed scholarships at the
3334 university; she was also a supporter of the Alzheimer's
3435 Association, and she was instrumental in the success of the Laredo
3536 Walk to End Alzheimer's; and
3637 WHEREAS, A valued member of the First Baptist Church,
3738 Mrs. Newman was guided in all her endeavors by her strong faith;
3839 above all, she was devoted to her family and cherished the time she
3940 spent with her loved ones; she was preceded in death by her husband
4041 and two sons, Joel and David; and
4142 WHEREAS, The life of Peggy Newman stands as an inspiring
4243 example of civic engagement, and those she left behind will forever
4344 cherish their memories of her warmth, grace, and kindness; now,
4445 therefore, be it
4546 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4647 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Peggy Jean Newman
4748 and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: to her
4849 children, Mark Newman and his wife, Darla, and Nancy De Anda and her
4950 husband, Javier; to her daughter-in-law, Ana Laura Newman; to her
5051 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and to her other
5152 relatives and many friends; and, be it further
5253 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5354 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5455 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Peggy Jean
5556 Newman.
