7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Laredo lost an admired philanthropist |
---|
8 | 9 | | with the passing of Peggy Jean Newman on April 19, 2024, at the age |
---|
9 | 10 | | of 92; and |
---|
10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of William and Beulah Beheler, the |
---|
11 | 12 | | former Peggy Beheler was born on August 6, 1931; she married the |
---|
12 | 13 | | love of her life, Bernard "B. P." Newman, and they were blessed with |
---|
13 | 14 | | four children, Joel, David, Mark, and Nancy; through the years, her |
---|
14 | 15 | | treasured family grew to include 11 grandchildren and 21 |
---|
15 | 16 | | great-grandchildren; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Newman invested in real estate through various |
---|
17 | 18 | | entities, and she served B. P. Newman Investment Company as a member |
---|
18 | 19 | | of the board and as president; in 1997, she became the first woman |
---|
19 | 20 | | to serve on the board of the International Bank of Commerce, and she |
---|
20 | 21 | | continued in that position for two decades; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Deeply committed to her community, Mrs. Newman |
---|
22 | 23 | | served on the boards of many nonprofit organizations, including the |
---|
23 | 24 | | United Way of Laredo; she donated land to the group and was actively |
---|
24 | 25 | | involved in the effort to build a home for its operations; she also |
---|
25 | 26 | | gave generously of her time and talents to such organizations as the |
---|
26 | 27 | | Salvation Army, Casa de Misericordia, Habitat for Humanity, the |
---|
27 | 28 | | Laredo Food Bank, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation; in 2020, she was |
---|
28 | 29 | | recognized by Catholic Charities for her years of selfless work to |
---|
29 | 30 | | advance its mission; moreover, she and her husband were champions |
---|
30 | 31 | | of higher education, playing important roles in the development of |
---|
31 | 32 | | Texas A&M International University, holding membership in the TAMIU |
---|
32 | 33 | | Heritage Society, and establishing two endowed scholarships at the |
---|
33 | 34 | | university; she was also a supporter of the Alzheimer's |
---|
34 | 35 | | Association, and she was instrumental in the success of the Laredo |
---|
35 | 36 | | Walk to End Alzheimer's; and |
---|
36 | 37 | | WHEREAS, A valued member of the First Baptist Church, |
---|
37 | 38 | | Mrs. Newman was guided in all her endeavors by her strong faith; |
---|
38 | 39 | | above all, she was devoted to her family and cherished the time she |
---|
39 | 40 | | spent with her loved ones; she was preceded in death by her husband |
---|
40 | 41 | | and two sons, Joel and David; and |
---|
41 | 42 | | WHEREAS, The life of Peggy Newman stands as an inspiring |
---|
42 | 43 | | example of civic engagement, and those she left behind will forever |
---|
43 | 44 | | cherish their memories of her warmth, grace, and kindness; now, |
---|
44 | 45 | | therefore, be it |

45 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

46 | 47 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Peggy Jean Newman |
---|
47 | 48 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: to her |
---|
48 | 49 | | children, Mark Newman and his wife, Darla, and Nancy De Anda and her |
---|
49 | 50 | | husband, Javier; to her daughter-in-law, Ana Laura Newman; to her |

50 | 51 | | 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren; and to her other |

51 | 52 | | relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
