67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
89 a close with the passing of admired educator George James Brown of
910 Mount Pleasant on December 30, 2023, at the age of 86; and
1011 WHEREAS, The son of Selma Leroy and Ethel Belle Brown, George
1112 Brown was born in Austin on September 16, 1937, and he grew up with
1213 the companionship of a sister, Cherie; he earned his bachelor's
1314 degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his master's
1415 degree from Texas A&M University; and
1516 WHEREAS, Mr. Brown enjoyed a long and rewarding career in
1617 education, proudly serving numerous school districts as a teacher
1718 and coach; he went on to become the owner of Jackson Business
1819 College, a consultant for the Texas Education Agency, and the
1920 superintendent of Harts Bluff Independent School District, and he
2021 ultimately was appointed deputy executive director of the TEA
2122 Region 8 Education Service Center before retiring in 2001;
2223 co-founder of the Texas Rural Education Association and president
2324 of the National Rural Education Association, he championed the
2425 needs of students in rural communities; in addition, he was a member
2526 of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and served on its
2627 legislative committee; and
2728 WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. Brown married his wife, Janice, and the
2829 couple shared a rewarding union that spanned nearly two decades; he
2930 took great joy in their blended family, which grew to include their
3031 six children, Kara, Keith, Kevin, Greg, Davey, and Mickey; over the
3132 years, he became a devoted grandfather to numerous grandchildren
3233 and great-grandchildren; a man of faith, he found solace and
3334 strength in his Baptist beliefs; and
3435 WHEREAS, George Brown made contributions of lasting value
3536 through his tireless efforts in behalf of public education, and
3637 although he will be deeply missed, those he left behind will cherish
3738 their memories of his warmth, kindness, and compassion; now,
3839 therefore, be it
3940 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4041 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of George James Brown and
4142 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
4243 Janice Brown; to his children, Kara Campbell and her husband,
4344 Tracey, Keith Brown and his wife, Darlyn, Kevin Brown, Greg Lewis
4445 and his wife, Kim, Davey Lewis and his wife, Jessica, and Mickey
4546 Lewis and his wife, Katie; to his 14 grandchildren and 4
4647 great-grandchildren; and to his many other relatives and friends;
4748 and, be it further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5051 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George
5152 Brown.
