7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

8 | 9 | | a close with the passing of admired educator George James Brown of |

9 | 10 | | Mount Pleasant on December 30, 2023, at the age of 86; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The son of Selma Leroy and Ethel Belle Brown, George |
---|
11 | 12 | | Brown was born in Austin on September 16, 1937, and he grew up with |
---|
12 | 13 | | the companionship of a sister, Cherie; he earned his bachelor's |
---|
13 | 14 | | degree from The University of Texas at Austin and his master's |
---|
14 | 15 | | degree from Texas A&M University; and |
---|
15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Brown enjoyed a long and rewarding career in |
---|
16 | 17 | | education, proudly serving numerous school districts as a teacher |
---|
17 | 18 | | and coach; he went on to become the owner of Jackson Business |
---|
18 | 19 | | College, a consultant for the Texas Education Agency, and the |
---|
19 | 20 | | superintendent of Harts Bluff Independent School District, and he |
---|
20 | 21 | | ultimately was appointed deputy executive director of the TEA |
---|
21 | 22 | | Region 8 Education Service Center before retiring in 2001; |
---|
22 | 23 | | co-founder of the Texas Rural Education Association and president |
---|
23 | 24 | | of the National Rural Education Association, he championed the |
---|
24 | 25 | | needs of students in rural communities; in addition, he was a member |
---|
25 | 26 | | of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and served on its |
---|
26 | 27 | | legislative committee; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, In 2004, Mr. Brown married his wife, Janice, and the |
---|
28 | 29 | | couple shared a rewarding union that spanned nearly two decades; he |
---|
29 | 30 | | took great joy in their blended family, which grew to include their |
---|
30 | 31 | | six children, Kara, Keith, Kevin, Greg, Davey, and Mickey; over the |
---|
31 | 32 | | years, he became a devoted grandfather to numerous grandchildren |
---|
32 | 33 | | and great-grandchildren; a man of faith, he found solace and |
---|
33 | 34 | | strength in his Baptist beliefs; and |
---|
34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, George Brown made contributions of lasting value |
---|
35 | 36 | | through his tireless efforts in behalf of public education, and |

36 | 37 | | although he will be deeply missed, those he left behind will cherish |
---|
37 | 38 | | their memories of his warmth, kindness, and compassion; now, |
