7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome is being honored with the 2025 |

8 | 9 | | Living Legend Award at the Texas Alliance of Black School Educators |

9 | 10 | | State Conference in Galveston on February 15, 2025; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of an exemplary career spanning four |

11 | 12 | | decades, Ms. Ison-Newsome distinguished herself as a teacher, |
---|
12 | 13 | | principal, and area superintendent, and during her 38 years with |
---|
13 | 14 | | the Dallas Independent School District, she also served as its |
---|
14 | 15 | | first dean of instruction and first chief of staff; under her |
---|
15 | 16 | | leadership, dozens of campuses saw vast improvements in |
---|
16 | 17 | | performance, and she was involved in many initiatives, including |
---|
17 | 18 | | the development of the Barack Obama Male Leadership Academy at A. |
---|
18 | 19 | | Maceo Smith; and |
---|
19 | 20 | | WHEREAS, This respected educator has garnered a multitude of |
---|
20 | 21 | | accolades, among them the Julia Brogdon Purnell Humanitarian Award |
---|
21 | 22 | | from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and in 2017, she was inducted |
---|
22 | 23 | | into the African American Education Archives & History Program Hall |
---|
23 | 24 | | of Fame; in addition, her footprints were installed on the Social |
---|
24 | 25 | | Justice Walk of Fame at Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas to |
---|
25 | 26 | | honor her lifelong civil rights activism; and |
---|
26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Ison-Newsome holds degrees from Indiana |
---|
27 | 28 | | University, the University of Louisville, and The Ohio State |
---|
28 | 29 | | University; she is a member of such organizations as the Top Ladies |
---|
29 | 30 | | of Distinction, Inc., and the National Council of Negro Women, |
---|
30 | 31 | | Inc., and she is currently the executive director of the Dallas |
---|
31 | 32 | | Regional chapter of the National Alliance of Black School |
---|
32 | 33 | | Educators; and |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Shirley Ison-Newsome has contributed to the |

34 | 35 | | betterment of her community through her exemplary achievements as |

35 | 36 | | an educator, and she has set an inspiring example of public service |

36 | 37 | | to which all may aspire; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Shirley Ison-Newsome on her |

39 | 40 | | receipt of the 2025 Living Legend Award from the Texas Alliance of |

40 | 41 | | Black School Educators and extend to her sincere best wishes for the |
