78 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Montague County are gathering in

910 at the State Capitol; and
1011 WHEREAS, Situated on the Red River in the Western Cross
1112 Timbers of North Central Texas, this region was originally
1213 inhabited by the Comanche, Wichita, and Kiowa Indians; in 1858, the
1314 county was organized from portions of Cooke County and named for
1415 Daniel Montague, surveyor of the Fannin Land District and veteran
1516 of the Mexican War; when federal troops withdrew from the area
1617 during the Civil War, Indian raids caused the population to decline
1718 until the 1870s, when an organized effort was made to drive native
1819 tribes from the county; by the early 1880s, the population had grown
1920 to 11,000 people; and
2021 WHEREAS, An abundance of grasslands attracted cattlemen to
2122 the region in the 1860s, and the emergence of large cattle ranches
2223 subsequently brought railroads to the county; by 1892, it was home
2324 to three rail systems that contributed to the area's growth and
2425 development as a center for agribusiness; in the early years, the
2526 county's economy was dominated by cattle ranching and cotton
2627 production, and in the 20th century, it expanded to incorporate
2728 other crops, as well as oil and gas production; and
2829 WHEREAS, Today, Montague County is home to more than 20,000
2930 people, and its economy benefits from the retail, health care, and
3031 educational services industries; notable communities include the
3132 county seat of Montague, as well as Saint Jo, Bowie, and Nocona,
3233 where the Nocona Boot Company was established in 1887; residents
3334 and visitors alike benefit from the recreational opportunities
3435 afforded by Lake Nocona and Amon G. Carter Lake, and outdoor
3536 enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as boating,
3637 fishing, and hunting; it also hosts a number of annual events, among
3738 them the Chisholm Trail Rodeo, the Jim Bowie Days Rodeo, and the
3839 Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival; and
3940 WHEREAS, The people of Montague County take great pride in
4041 their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter
4142 future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them for their unique
4243 contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
4344 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4445 Legislature hereby recognize February 18, 2025, as Montague County
4546 Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting
4647 delegation.
