7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Montague County are gathering in |

8 | 9 | | Austin on February 18, 2025, in celebration of Montague County Day |

9 | 10 | | at the State Capitol; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Situated on the Red River in the Western Cross |
---|
11 | 12 | | Timbers of North Central Texas, this region was originally |
---|
12 | 13 | | inhabited by the Comanche, Wichita, and Kiowa Indians; in 1858, the |
---|
13 | 14 | | county was organized from portions of Cooke County and named for |
---|
14 | 15 | | Daniel Montague, surveyor of the Fannin Land District and veteran |
---|
15 | 16 | | of the Mexican War; when federal troops withdrew from the area |
---|
16 | 17 | | during the Civil War, Indian raids caused the population to decline |
---|
17 | 18 | | until the 1870s, when an organized effort was made to drive native |
---|
18 | 19 | | tribes from the county; by the early 1880s, the population had grown |
---|
19 | 20 | | to 11,000 people; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, An abundance of grasslands attracted cattlemen to |
---|
21 | 22 | | the region in the 1860s, and the emergence of large cattle ranches |
---|
22 | 23 | | subsequently brought railroads to the county; by 1892, it was home |
---|
23 | 24 | | to three rail systems that contributed to the area's growth and |
---|
24 | 25 | | development as a center for agribusiness; in the early years, the |
---|
25 | 26 | | county's economy was dominated by cattle ranching and cotton |
---|
26 | 27 | | production, and in the 20th century, it expanded to incorporate |
---|
27 | 28 | | other crops, as well as oil and gas production; and |
---|
28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Today, Montague County is home to more than 20,000 |
---|
29 | 30 | | people, and its economy benefits from the retail, health care, and |
---|
30 | 31 | | educational services industries; notable communities include the |
---|
31 | 32 | | county seat of Montague, as well as Saint Jo, Bowie, and Nocona, |
---|
32 | 33 | | where the Nocona Boot Company was established in 1887; residents |
---|
33 | 34 | | and visitors alike benefit from the recreational opportunities |
---|
34 | 35 | | afforded by Lake Nocona and Amon G. Carter Lake, and outdoor |
---|
35 | 36 | | enthusiasts are drawn to the area for activities such as boating, |
---|
36 | 37 | | fishing, and hunting; it also hosts a number of annual events, among |
---|
37 | 38 | | them the Chisholm Trail Rodeo, the Jim Bowie Days Rodeo, and the |
---|
38 | 39 | | Chicken and Bread Days Heritage Festival; and |

39 | 40 | | WHEREAS, The people of Montague County take great pride in |

40 | 41 | | their rich history as they work together to build an even brighter |
---|
41 | 42 | | future, and it is indeed fitting to honor them for their unique |

42 | 43 | | contributions to the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |

44 | 45 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 18, 2025, as Montague County |
---|
45 | 46 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
46 | 47 | | delegation. |
