| 7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an iconic pitmaster with the |

| 8 | 9 | | passing of John Brotherton on January 15, 2024, at the age of 49; |

| 10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, A native of Liberty, Mr. Brotherton studied at Sam |

| 11 | 12 | | Houston State University in Huntsville, and early in his career, he |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | worked a number of jobs in Austin; he developed a deep passion for |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | cooking and for smoking barbecue, and he honed his skills while |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | operating the Hall of Flame food truck, which opened in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | Pflugerville in 2011; two years later, he partnered with another |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | food truck owner, Jay Yates, to establish a brick-and-mortar |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | restaurant, Curly's Carolina, TX, in Round Rock; and |

| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Brotherton went on to found a smoked meats |

| 19 | 20 | | pop-up and catering business, Brotherton Barbecue, in 2015, and he |

| 20 | 21 | | later began cooking for his friend Kelly Gerry's restaurant, Black |

| 21 | 22 | | Iron Eats, in Pflugerville; the pair merged their businesses to |

| 22 | 23 | | form Brotherton's Black Iron Barbecue in 2017, and under |

| 23 | 24 | | Mr. Brotherton's able leadership, the restaurant attracted loyal |

| 24 | 25 | | customers from far and wide; among his many achievements, he helped |

| 25 | 26 | | the restaurant to earn a place on multiple barbecue lists compiled |

| 26 | 27 | | by Texas Monthly, including the magazine's "50 Best BBQ Joints" |

| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Brotherton enjoyed the |

| 29 | 30 | | love and support of his wife, Brenda, and he took great pride in |

| 30 | 31 | | their son, Braeden; and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, John Brotherton earned the admiration of all who |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | knew him, not only for his success as a restaurateur and businessman |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | but also for his exceptional warmth and generosity, and he leaves |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | behind a legacy that will resonate for years to come; now, |

| 36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
