67 R E S O L U T I O N
78 WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the
89 passing of Azucena Rodriguez Barrera of Robstown on January 28,
910 2025, at the age of 95; and
1011 WHEREAS, The daughter of Felix Rodriguez and Isabel Guajardo
1112 Rodriguez, the former "Tena" Rodriguez was born in Robstown on
1213 August 24, 1929; her parents instilled in her the values of faith,
1314 perseverance, and hard work, and from an early age, she joined in
1415 their endeavors at Goodridge Cleaners; she married the love of her
1516 life, Gregorio "Gollo" Barrera, in January 1946, and they were
1617 blessed with two treasured children, Rene and Hilda; a devoted
1718 mother, she sewed clothes for her son and daughter, cooked
1819 wonderful meals, and surrounded them with boundless affection; she
1920 was a lifelong member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church; and
2021 WHEREAS, When her offspring were older, Mrs. Barrera began
2122 working alongside her husband at Pena's Café; they dreamed of
2223 owning a restaurant themselves, and in 1978, they opened Barrera's
2324 Fried Chicken in Robstown; she greeted everyone with a radiant
2425 smile and remembered the favorite orders of the many loyal
2526 regulars; gracious and elegant, she was always perfectly coiffed;
2627 and
2728 WHEREAS, Mrs. Barrera was dedicated above all to her family,
2829 and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of
2930 tremendous pride and joy; "Memo" attended all their school events
3031 and celebrations, and she kept her pantry stocked with their
3132 favorite snacks and her television tuned to their favorite shows;
3233 while spending happy afternoons playing Lotería, she taught the
3334 younger generations the beauty of the Spanish language and imparted
3435 the same strong values of her youth; she and her husband shared a
3536 fulfilling relationship until his passing; and
3637 WHEREAS, Tena Barrera led a caring life that was rich in the
3738 intangibles that matter most, and although she is deeply missed,
3839 her loved ones will treasure her legacy of laughter, wisdom, and
3940 unwavering devotion to family and faith; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas
4142 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Azucena Rodriguez
4243 Barrera and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to
4344 her children, Rene Barrera Sr. and his wife, Velma, and Hilda Salas;
4445 to her sister, Norma Salinas; to her grandchildren, Rene Barrera
4546 Jr., Dr. Mandy Barrera, Agustin Barrera, and Arturo Salas Jr.; to
4647 her great-grandchildren, Agustin "AJ" Barrera, Jenna Barrera,
4748 Rianna Barrera, Carlos Salas, and Sammy Salas; and to her other
4849 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4950 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5051 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
5152 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Tena
5253 Barrera.
