7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents and community leaders of Webb County |

8 | 9 | | are gathering in Austin on February 5, 2025, to celebrate Webb |

9 | 10 | | County Day at the State Capitol; and |

10 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The land that is now Webb County has evidence of |
---|
11 | 12 | | human settlement dating back approximately 11,000 years, and it is |
---|
12 | 13 | | known to have been occupied by the Coahuiltecans, Comanches, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | Lipan Apaches; as the sixth largest county in Texas by area, Webb |
---|
14 | 15 | | County encompasses some 3,400 square miles of rolling terrain |
---|
15 | 16 | | covered by native mesquite, thorny shrubs, whiplash pappusgrass, |
---|
16 | 17 | | and cacti and interlaced with creeks that drain to the Nueces and |
---|
17 | 18 | | Rio Grande Rivers; and |
---|
18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Webb County, founded in 1848, holds a distinguished |
---|
19 | 20 | | place in the history of Texas; named in honor of Judge James Webb, |
---|
20 | 21 | | former secretary of state and secretary of the treasury for the |
---|
21 | 22 | | Republic of Texas, the county has helped shape the development of |
---|
22 | 23 | | the state through its contributions to trade, ranching, and |
---|
23 | 24 | | agriculture; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Webb |

25 | 26 | | County became a major center for cattle ranching and railroad |
---|
26 | 27 | | expansion, further cementing its role in Texas' economic |
---|
27 | 28 | | infrastructure; the growth of cattle ranching in the county |
---|
28 | 29 | | resulted in the establishment of large ranching enterprises that |
---|
29 | 30 | | became economic powerhouses for the region and state, and the |
---|
30 | 31 | | introduction of new breeding techniques and water management |
---|
31 | 32 | | practices helped make the county a leading producer of livestock; |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The arrival of the railroad in the late 19th century |

34 | 35 | | transformed Webb County into a critical nexus for transportation, |

35 | 36 | | facilitating the movement of cattle, goods, and people; beyond |

36 | 37 | | connecting Laredo to major markets across Texas and the United |
---|
37 | 38 | | States, the expansion of the rail lines spurred the region's |

38 | 39 | | population growth and the continued development of commerce and |

39 | 40 | | industry; and |

40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Today, Webb County is home to around 270,000 |

41 | 42 | | residents; the county thrives as a leader in international trade |

42 | 43 | | and public service, and the presence of institutions such as Texas |

43 | 44 | | A&M International University make it an educational hub for the |

44 | 45 | | region; and |

45 | 46 | | WHEREAS, The people of Webb County take great pride in their |

46 | 47 | | rich history as they work to build an even brighter and more |
---|
47 | 48 | | prosperous future, and it is indeed fitting that they be honored for |

48 | 49 | | their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|
49 | 50 | | therefore, be it |

50 | 51 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 89th Texas |
---|
51 | 52 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 5, 2025, as Webb County Day |
---|
52 | 53 | | at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the visiting |
---|
53 | 54 | | delegation. |
